We could not get Coentrao, he already said he would only go to Real.

Baines was a possibility but he would have cost 20m, and the brass said we weren't going to spend that kind of money for another LB. Mancini tends to like working with defensive players who aren't fulfilling their potential, like Richards and Lescott, with reasonable success. Clichy has pace, something we desperately lack. He's also homegrown, something we will struggle with after our departures of mainly homegrown players.

I do not know whether Mancini can improve him as a player, but he's certainly better than the immobile Kolarov and we can't lose much with only 7m invested. There is a statistical chart comparing all the best LB in the league but can't post link as I'm under 20 posts. :(

It's City's 'mix and match' attitude that gets me. For every Silva there is a Barry, for every Tevez there is a Santa Cruz. Admittedly you are being held to ransom trying to secure the best players, but you also pay over the odds for some quite ordinary ones. If I was Mancini I would have said that I'll ship Kolarov, Boateng and Bridge out to raise the funds for Baines myself. You've got acres of dead wood to get rid of.

lol.

Lescott was an excellent player before he moved, playing for England and performing at a very high level, also he hardly missed a game for us.

He moves to your joke of a Club and is then perma injured and playing like total crap.

See Dzeko, Edin, for another example.

I guess once you throw huge bundles of cash at players they kinda stop caring.

Unlucks and thanks for the £22m.

It's like the "Reverse Galactico" approach...

Instead of spunking money on attacking players Man City have bought 12 left backs and 16 holding midfielders.

Coentrao is excellent going forward, just as you'd expect from a former winger. He's 23, which is about 3 years younger than Baines. I agree though that Leighton has to be worth somewhere in the region of £25m.

And Baines isn't?

Coentrao has 15 assists in his entire career. Baines got 11 in the league alone, last year. A much, much tougher league, too.

I'll give you the age thing, and I'm not saying Coentrao is anything but a fantastic player, but I'm just trying to highlight how special Baines is. You just don't see fullbacks with his consistent, quality delivery.

Baines statisticly is awsome, just to note Baines scored and assited more last season then Clichy has in his entitre career. That would be great if he was an awsome full back but his defending is powder puff at best. Arnse is no fool.

I didn't say anything bad about Baines. I was giving you reasons why someone would pay £27m for Coentrao to give any valuation for Baines some context.

Baines comparrisons are skewed, we relied heavily on Baines last year, so it is very tough to compare like for like when the situations are different.

He is back to playing well for us. Mancini got him playing much better at the end of the season and that's when we started holding opponents scoreless. We wouldn't have won the FA Cup without him.

I thought Kolorov was meant to be the business. Saw highlights of him on MOTD and stuff. Smashing goals in. Then randomly my City mate tells me that they all hate him?

What's the dealio?

Selfish player. Shoots too much from distance and doesn't put in quality crosses from what I hear.

Purely in money terms, if he was to go we need comparisons with Coentrao rather than Clichy or Enrique. They'll look at what similar players are going for to try and judge his value. Coentrao has shone on the international stage and been playing European football regularly, so that would give him the edge.

Back to City, so now they've bought Savic from Partizan Belgrade. It seems another odd deal. He's only played 28 times for Partizan and 6 times for Montenegro. Arsenal had him on trial last year but decided that £2.2m was too much for him. Yet City are happy to pay £9m. I can only presume that they want their own Vidic. If I was in Mancini's shoes I'd do what Arsenal did with the Invincibles and have a defensive unit of home grown players such as Hart, Richards, Cahill and Baines (plus Kompany) because then he could have as many foreigners as he liked in the forwards and still fulfill the home based players rule.

Good all round full back, £7m is a great deal for Citeh, though i thought they'd go for Cissokho.
