Hey well travelled people of GOT, need a bit of travel advice.

I'm off to China next week for 2 months, working along the south and east coast (guangzhou, xiamen, shenzen, zhongshan, zhuhai, shanghai, tianjin, qingdao and bejing).

Anyone been? @the esk I'm looking at you. Any tips? They get the footy over there right?

I've been
Shanghai = fantastic
Beijing = Worth a visit
The rest = ABSOLUTE UNMITIGATED DIRT HOLE AVOID AVOID AVOID

Oh and don't be tempted to take internal flights or the overnight sleeper trains. Just don't

Oh and don't trust anyone who is helping you "translate" in Bejiing airport. Even if they look official with a badge etc.
conmen.
Out of 300 flights mine was the only one cancelled so I was looking a bit panicked. So a nice man in airport uniform came to help. Put me on an earlier flight. Rushed me through customs. But had my passsport in his hand and refused to hand it over until i paid him. bellend.

The planes are tiny.

Pretty sure I've got some internal flights, why are they so bad?

They're not as bad as they used to be.

One time I flew from Beijing to Hefei. OK flight (apart from locals smoking with impunity). As we came into land, we touch the runway and then the engines power up and we take off again. Circle round, come in to land, repeat, circle round, land and taxi in.

Once through the airport I ask the local interpreter what was going on, she told me it was a trainee pilot practicing lol

Been to Beijing and Shanghai. Both really amazing cities although I much preferred Beijing. I enjoyed around five days there first time round and then three days the second, while I spent a week in Shanghai. The food especially in Beijing is immense. Get yourself to Ghost Street for authentic cuisine. Also don't be afraid to sample all the street food - you'll be missing out if you don't. Also don't drink any of that Tsing Tao beer rubbish they serve up, tastes worse than piss. The university area in Beijing has good food too.

One tip - if you're into your food as much as I am - is to download the Trip Advisor Beijing app, same for Shanghai too. There you'll find all the best eateries for every budget.

The app also has massive lists of things to do and even walking tours etc, all rated by fellow travellers so you're sure to find the best spots to do literally anything you want to.

Another thing that's just entered my mind:a LOT of people will view you merely as a walking cash machine. Be aware of this! Don't talk back to people who appear to want to practise English with you at a tourist attraction - it's likely a ruse to get you to follow them to a tea shop where you'll be stung for whatever is in your wallet.

just the man I wanted :)

I've no idea what clothes to pack, its summer so I assume its going to be hot *irons speedos* but rainy, right?

What are the chicks like?

Which language do they speak in these areas? I always like to learn at the bare minimum bar lingo and please and thank you, goes a long way!

Thanks people

be carefull not to iron the 's' off ...

Yep, same as at major tourist attractions. Someone in a smart uniform will come up and tell you 'you won't be able to understand any of the signs in there, all in Chinese, let me translate' - it is total tosh, most of the stuff is translated.

And if you are off to any of the rice fields or whatever, don't go on 'official tours', you'll get routed to some jarg village on the way and be treated like a walking ATM.

My god what a dive that country is lol
