...defending set pieces is something that should be repetitively worked on in training. I remember under Moyes we hardly conceded and Jagielka saying how well the players were drilled. We’ve been very poor since, particularly under Martinez. I notice Unsworth said in his post match interview that he wants to get the players out on the training pitch, be interesting if we become more organised in that area.
And while we're at it;
1) stop with this old Moyes tactic of EVERYBODY back for corners, leave one on the halfway line to keep them from just throwing it back at us
2) when we do get round to putting men on posts for corners the Left footed player goes on the RIGHT post

See 32 secs in, Harris and McCreadie trying to swing their 'chocolate leg' at the bouncing ball.
The Catt was on to this, He had Kendall on the left post and Harvey on the right post for corners...they were also on the post because they were pretty poor at attacking balls from corners.

Putting a player on far post when defending corners or set pieces in general is so yesterday.

The situation on the post above simply won't exist in today's football as the ref will stop play for goalkeeper interference.

I hate it anytime we lose and this was no exception. Very disappointed, especially with that first half performance which was frankly no different than anything else served up this season.

On the plus side there were definite signs of improvement in the second half. After the break we played with energy, pace and, most importantly, purpose. I think we created more chances in that second half than we have in our last half dozen games combined, as we took the game to a top 6 side away from home for the first time since Martinez left. Whatever they put in the tea at half time can we have more of please starting with Leicester at the weekend.

When I saw the predominantly British line up I had an idea what was coming, which is why I was so deflated by the same old same old first half performance. I also think Unsy made some clangers in team selection. No way would I play Jagielka and Williams together as a back 2 ever again, especially when asking the team to play a high pressing game. Plus there is no way Rooney can play the number 9 role. His instinct is to drop deep and we need somebody there to lead the line and stretch their defence, even if that somebody is Niasse. Rooney needs to play the number 10/ACM role, rotating with Sigurdsson/Klaassen, or not at all.

I was genuinely pleased to see Beni given an opportunity, and after an understandably hesitant start I don't think he disappointed. He's one of many youngsters who need to be given an opportunity to see what they can do at the top level. My one regret here is that Liam Walsh is currently wasting away at Birmingham, as I feel sure Unsy would have started him ahead of Beni had he been available for selection.

As regards MOM, I gave that to Beni for a highly impressive debut, but I actually think Davies probably edged it on the pitch.

Overall, another disappointing outcome, but signs that our caretaker manager may be able to turn our season around. All I can ask is that he learns from his selection mistakes from last night, and that we carry the commitment and purpose of that second half performance into the other games he has in charge.

Still time to vote for your MotM from Wednesday night... poll remains open till Sunday, next game day ;)
