If you want some great guitar and don't mind a bit of heavy metal, try Iron Maiden. Phantom of The Opera is some great guitar.

One thing I learnt in school, is that the most unfashionable bands were actually the coolest. Everyone in my year were into Def Leopard whilst I started listening to the Doors, Hendrix etc...

Pink Floyd also, very good stuff.

It is Def Leppard and the lead singer(Joe Elliot) is a relation. Has no importance, but they were never fashionable outside of the states. Except for a brief time in 87/88. Doors, Hendrix were far more popular over here. Just a thought. na na na na na. ;) ;) (y) (y) :P :P

Floyd, with a touch of Hawkwind for good measure thrown in at random intervals does a night of smoking the world of good though.

Is he a relation? My god. That's a claim to fame. I just though Pour Some Sugar On Me, was just as sickly as it sounded.

Sorry mate. :)

Hah, Def Leppard is a 'Heavy Metal' band from Sheffield.

HAHA!!!

Oh crap, I'll just get my coat.........

Sorry, for guitarists you need to be talking about what you like in a guitarist before you can qualify one as better than another.

Let me start this by saying [Poor language removed] off Noel Gallagher as a guitarist. Painting by numbers is harder than what he plays. He IS a talented songwriter though no doubt but in terms of guitarist talent, let's not go there.

I always look at things from a metal perspective but not exclusively so.
For sheer technique and taking playing the instrument forward I'd have to say there are 2 guitarists that are pretty hard to surpass (although they are not alone in this lofty category).
1. Joe Satriani

2. Steve Vai

(you could squeeze Malmsteen in here as he plays neo-classical which the others don't, but he is a widely acknowledged **** so I've left him out)

For sheer funk and writing good hooks for me personally it would be :
1. Joe Satriani
2. Angus Young
3. Stevie Ray Vaughan
4. Albert King
5. Ry Cooder
6. Dimebag Darrell

And for just being a great songwriter and using the guitar as a instrument to convey feeling, emotion or a thought :
1. Joe Satriani
2. Dave Gilmour
3. Eric Johnson
and many others spring to mind but these top my list

BTW Whoever said Vai can't write a decent track, here is probably one of the most recognised and well known tracks of the 80's written by the great fiddler himself :
Steve Vai - For the love of god.

it was my opinion(overblown) to say fretwankers cant write a melody, what I was getting at is from my perspective, melody and a hook in the guitar work, is superior to technique, and Ive never been able to take any pleasure from the majority of these 'type' of artists body of work, despite the odd exception to the rule.

I also like what ive heard from ry cooder ie. crossroads etc,.
I actually played 'always with me, always with you' by satriani for a music exam, and its the only song ive heard by him, I've always meant to investigate further.
