Regarding Cahill.

First of all he's not 5 times the player Fellaini is so let's not be silly here.

Look at our midfield when all fit .

Arteta
Pienaar
Fellaini
Billy
Cahill
Rodwell
Neville
Osman
Gosling
Peterlin
Wallace

Moyes has already tried to get Banega, which shows us that he wants to further bolster our midfield.

Lets look at our best midfield players:

Arteta
Pienaar
Fellaini
Billy ???
Cahill
Neville
--------
Rodwell
Gosling

Add Banega, or someone similar ?

We will have to seriously rotate our squad to accomodate players.
Cahill can play off the striker, but it has been proven he is not the best option for a central midfield role.

I don't know how Moyes will pick the squad.
We need a defensive midfield player for sure. That only leaves 3 midfield places , or 4 depending on formation.

Throw some options around and see if Cahill fits best.

I'm not sure he does.

Guys, I adore Cahill.
I'm just being realistic here and seeing a potential (wonderful) problem in midfield.

Tim's problem is that he competes with felliani for the supporting mid position. when we don't have arteta (or another creative force) then our style must include hoofing it up to the 6'6" man with 7' hair. i predict that once arteta is back, cahill will be more useful to the team due to changes in the way we bring the ball down the field.

He's our best second striker, we play 4-4-1-1. I don't see the problem to be honest. He fits in perfectly and he's better than the player he's competing with for his role.

The only midfielder I'd feel confident about playing 4-4-2 is Mikel Arteta, maybe Jack Rodwell to a lesser extent alongside Arteta.

Since Mikel got injured the football we play has been mundane to say the least. Neither Cahill or Neville could be described as visionaries. So it becomes down to young Jack (feed the jack and he will score) Rodwell to boss midfield seeing as how Fellaini is completely off his game.
So. Why can't Peinnar, who ran the show against Brazil in the confederations cup, get a game there ? He was that good that Kaka had to resort to hacking him down .
It worked with Mikel when he got brought into the centre.
