That Lukaku was always best when he had players around him - which is true.

Lukaku obviously could play up front on his own but his best all-round performances came in a three or a two.
All strikers need support with players in and around them regardless of formation but to say Lukaku plays best as a second striker and didn't really have the attributes to play the lone role is nonsense

he didn't have the best attributes to play a lone role though...

his hold up play has improved, but was never great. His movement at times against packed defences was shocking.

Of course what you say in regards to all strikers working better with a partner is correct, but some are definitely more adept to playing the lone role than others - I'd never consider Lukaku a brilliant lone striker. He's an excellent player, but he'd have scored even more had we given him support.

Showed some pace there and impressed me, thought i was wrong about him. But then I saw it was against a guy who works part time in a pastry shop.

Hopefully has a good world cup so can be sold and make a loan move for rashford or batsuayi.
ha ha.

You're very funny:)

I'm sorry but i am baffled he played 95% of all his game's in this role and has one of the best scoring records in Europe Lukaku isn't a target man more of a poacher who likes to get in behind with his pace/power the games you're referring to wasn't his fault it was our tactics all strikers struggle when the gap between them and midfield is too big it's been like that here for year's

How can you be baffled? I've explained my point thoroughly.

We all watched him play. We all moaned about his hold up play at times. Yes, the lad is a great natural goalscorer and I'm not doubting his talent. But he'd be even better played in a partnership.

A lone striker needs to have certain facets to his game - and I think Tosun for example has them more than Lukaku but even he struggles at times because we haven't ever got the support up to him.

I suppose well have to agree to disagree on this one Lukaku plays the lone role better than anyone in the league bar Kane in my opinion Tosun does need a partner though

He's never had a partner all the way though his career for both club and country? Would you prefer a big lump like Rondon?

Lukaku is a fantastic striker.

However, to say he plays the role of a lone striker (i.e. drops deep to link the play, holds the ball up, makes runs to wide areas of the pitch etc) better than anyone in the league is ridiculous mate.

Lukaku was great for us. Not disputing that. But at times - especially against the best sides - we played without any outball or anybody to stretch the game, because Rom just wouldn't do it.

As you said yourself, he's a poacher. He's built like Drogba, but plays nothing like him. He's at his best on the shoulder of the last man, using his pace and power to get through on goal.

Giroud, Morata, Firmino (even though he plays in a three as a false 9, he'd probably be better), Rondon, Tosun etc probably all play the lone striker role better (that's off the top of my head) in regards to those factors I label above.

However, without a doubt Lukaku is a better striker than all of them when it comes to goalscoring and getting in the right positions. I'm not disputing that.

2 good goals.
Bit of luck and a good pre season we may see a little more out of Cenk.
I want to be proved wrong more than anyone.
