Theres a lot of similarities between central midfield and central defensive players this season;

Stones/McCarthy = Injured
Alcaraz/Gibson=Injured
Distin/Pienaar = Finished
Jagielka/Barry = Off form/injured
Browning/Besic=New to side
Galloway/Ledson =Coming through

Martinez was clearly hoping to get through to this summer and have a core of these players:

Stones /McCarthy (First choice)
Jagielka/Barry (Veterans)
Browning/Besic (Rotation)
Galloway/Ledson (Game time)

Quite clear that even in summer we would need a player next to Stones and also a Barry replacement (EDIT so soon)..however I think Martinez is only going to buy IF one of his main targets becomes available, if not wait till the summer.
