There is an assumption that we'll be bringing in cover at CB, with Alcaraz and Distin leaving.

Jagielka, 32 and Stones, 21 command that position, we're not going to improve on either.

So cover...

We have;

Brendan Galloway, 19. Professional debut at 15, Martinez signed this lad and he's already made senior appearances. At current progress you'd expect him to be part of Martinez plans;

"Brendan is a young man that is developing into a very special defender.

"He is a defender that can cope with one-v-one situations, is very good in the air and is very composed on the ball.

"He can start the play, play as a left-back and probably in the future become a centre-half as well because his defending qualities are so good.

"All in all, what he is now is a player who, in my eyes, has been outstanding in his standards over the last 10 months since we brought him to the football club."

Tyias Browning, 21. Clearly highly rated - you don't bring him on in a Derby at Anfield if you don't;

As a player he has been phenomenal in training. He is so powerful and so good in his defensive duties – in his one-v-ones,” explained manager Roberto Martinez.

“I thought he coped with Sterling like very few players can cope one-v-one – and then going forward he had a real penetrating look about him.

“He’s got power and he gets to a ball he’s got no right to and a goal came from it.

“But I was impressed with the way he coped with the derby, with the first game he played for his side and that’s down to his mentality.

“It wasn’t a gamble from a footballing point of view. It was a gamble from a human point of view and I’m so glad he showed that kind of performance.”

Unless either are shipped off on loan, shouldn't these be getting some games this season?

We absolutely need an experienced CB in, it's not even a debate in my opinion. I think another attacking player is more of a priority but we still need a CB.

What if Jagielka is kept out for a couple of months or more? Two under 21s as your CB pairing? That's playing with fire.

Nah we need some experienced cover.

Got the same vibes with Galloway that I did with Stones though. Sometimes lids just have it. He's going to be exceptional.

Browning has done well in preseason so far.

Major plus point with Martinez compared to previous is that he does promote the young lids to the first team. Good timing too as we have a very good bunch coming through.

I might be making it up, but I could have sworn I read something a few months ago that Martinez said about loaning both of them out this season.

Browning is powerful and quick, but not so great with the ball ("he can't play" as one of the youth coaches said about him a couple of months ago).

Galloway is sort of the opposite. Less powerful but elegant with the ball.

Neither of them are ready to play at centre back for us, Martinez said both need games at full back before they'll be ready to play in the middle. We need a central defender (preferably a left-sided one) to come in for a couple of years until they're both ready for the first team. If I was a betting man I'd say Galloway will make it here and Browning won't.

Will we really miss last seasons Distin and Alcaraz?

I'd rather we went with what we have, before spending any decent money on mediocrity to sit on the bench.

We did that with Senderos and co when we had Mustafi.

Browning is sound. Galloway too, but I'd prefer him on the left for another season.

Evans would do me just fine. If not him, someone of equal experience. Not THE priority signing, but important to get right.
