Having had both cats and dogs in my time, I would say in general that dogs are very reliant on their owners whereas cats are independent.

But actually, the whole thing can be completely turned on its head. Cats can be very cuddly and dependent and some dogs are quite dismissive of their owners and need to be reined in.

....never had a pet since I got my own house in the early 80s but from my experience, dogs are domesticated whilst cats are wild. I suppose they accommodate each other in the same house but would prefer if the other was elsewhere.
