Catalan Independence. A football perspective

Nah. Barcelona brings in way too much money for anything like this to happen. If Monaco, Swansea and Cardiff can all play in other countries' leagues, can't see a single reason why that won't be a case now, no matter what happens on those elections.

Even if it happens, I read on several websites that they would play in French league in that case.

I'm sure they'd still play in La Liga even if Catalonia got independence

It's the most beneficial outcome for all parties involved

Helps the league to keep the toxic Classico Rivalry and the money it brings in, helps Barcelona to still rage against the machine as opposed to being a big fish in a small pond and it helps Real Madrid to have their rival to keep them on their toes

They'll stay in La Liga, unless everyone has truly lost their minds

I was in Catalonia on holiday recently. Their commitment to the Catalan flag and language is borderline nazi. I could imagine folk who choose not to fly the flag being ostracised in smaller communities. In Girona I even saw a sign proclaiming 'Catalunya - the new Europe nation!'. A tad presumptious.

Catalan is a daft mongrel language of French and Spanish that they insist of sticking at the top of menus, signs etc. Annoyed me after a while.

Let's face it......competing in a two team Catalonian league would be the death knell for FCB.

And what about their Spanish international players......what happens to their career at that level?

I cannot understand why this guy is do adamant that Barcelona couldn't continue in La Liga.

There is a precedent right here in the UK.

Derry City at present based in the United Kingdom yet play in the Republic of Ireland's league instead of the UK Northern Ireland league.

Then we have the matter of Swansea and Cardiff.....although both are in the UK they play in a "foreign" league as far as international football goes.....Wales and England both being separate F.A.

If Catalunya does leave Spain, I would have no doubt some accomodation will be reached regarding the football.

The Spanish FA would bend over backwards (and probably forwards) to ensure Barcelona stay in the league. Bit of a non-story this. And as for Catalan-born Spanish players - well they'll probably have a pretty competitive national side right from the off.
