I'm currently at cross roads.

One path = My current employer has offered me a job with a substantial pay rise, but the job itself is dull, really, really dull. But the pay now, and certainly within five years would allow a fairly decent standard of living but I know I would be living for 5 o'clock/weekends.

Second path = A provisional offer for a career that I know I would love but the starting salary is piss poor in comparison.

Third path = A mixture of path one and two and one directly related to my academic background. A credible career but nothing special salary wise.

Fourth path = Iraq/Afganistan

So that old aged question, whats more important to you (if you can't have both) - how enjoyable your career is, or the pay packet.

If you love what you do then you'll never work another day for the rest of your life.

I couldn't handle the 9-5 existence but then its easy to say that without a mortgage, wife and kids to support.

Option 2 all day, start off slow but prove your worth and the big bucks will follow. Plus, you'll never dread Monday morning which is a horrid thing to do.

Thats what I'm intending to find out.

I'll never work for an organisation that doesn't reward ability with moolah.

Did I just say moolah?

Having money isn't all that great, altho like chic says, that may be different when you actually really NEED it. Job you enjoy all day for me.

take time out, stick on a backpack and do it while you can. you may even get a better offer along the way.
job satisfaction has to be the more important, there's nothing worse than being stuck doing something you hate, my job satisfaction comes from the fact that i get to spend a lot of time with the kids, i dont earn anywhere near what i did, but i had to do a job i detested and never wanted to do from the start, and working ridiculous shift patterns. we would be better off financially but i would have a life dictated by work. as long as i get enough to pay the bills, the kids are happy and we all have our health then that's all i need. a winning team would be appreciated as well.

that's easy for me to say though, cos i didnt go to uni and get a top degree, i would imagine the jobs that you would be offered would be totally different to what i was, although i did hoik back here from a job that i enjoyed with a decent wage in nz, probably the only job i've had that could've led to better things.

Become a 'citizen of ithaca' and chill for a while, the university of life has a campus in most destinations, and is to be recommended.

Thats why path four is an attractive option. I don't have the money to do it otherwise.

I intend to move abroad as soon as the mrs finishes Uni - path one would give the means to do so much sooner than path two.

I'm going to have to make a decision by Christmas:unsure:

path 4 wasn't on my route, i made a rule... nowhere that i thought i might get shot, i thought it was out of the window on the 1st day in detroit.
the ideal time to go though, while she's still at uni and cant tag along, pack your bags and fill yer boots, just dont go via north wales.

Do you have any chances for promotions if you take job 1?

In other words, do you have the chance to improve the position there if you take it?

Take the money .... for now.
Consider your options at a later date once you've tried it out for a few months.
As long as you aren't falling asleep as soon as you come home from exaustion and stress, then you can make a boring job more interesting by being a little resourceful.
