Lads, little bit clueless with the protocols of this sort of thing so looking for advice.

Lass on my street knocked last night to say she’d bumped into the back of my car by accident & that she’ll be going through her insurers with it as hers is a mess. Mine isn’t actually that bad from pics I took last night just a few marks near the rear light. I know the girl so no big deal.

Now, my predicament falls in what to do now. I’ve taken pics last night but it was dark so will take some more this morning. Do I need to ring up my insurance or will hers do it all? As it’s a lease car do you think I need to ring and inform them about it?

Cheers.

Giver her your details. She should pass them onto her insurers. You should give your insurers the heads up and pass her details onto them.

She hit you so her company should deal with it and repair your car too for any damage you do find.

Make sure though your insurance company knows just in case she tries to pull a quick one.

Take some more pics in the light, as the ones you took last night will serve as ones “ taken at the time “ and the ones taken in the light will provide more detail.

Inform your insurers and give them her details / ins etc and they will do the rest.

They’ll send an engineer out / you’ll have to take the car to a garage so they can assess the damage.

She’s obviously a decent person as she knocked to tell you, many people would’ve kept quiet, as it’ll affect her insurance premiums next year.

Your leasing company will likely bill you for any imperfections on return.... imperfections mind, let alone damage. Probably for the best therefore to have it fixed properly.

Given modern sharp insurance practices, you'll probably lose some no claims policy since they've learned its "no claim" and not "no blame". Depends on how reasonable they are.

If it were my own car I'd leave it be to protect my insurance and I'm not prissy about imperfections - but I've heard of leading companies who look for any reason to squeeze extra cash from their beloved customers.

I wouldn’t ring the lease company straight away, however I would inform your insurance of the accident so you can give your account and provide the pictures.

She seems a nice girl, who probably won’t contest blame, but from copious amounts of experience there are those who at a later day sway their testimony.

If you’ve given your account straight away, it will potentially benefit you into the long run.

Think:
- time,
- location,
- circumstances,
- number of people in car,
- visible injuries or complains of pain etc.
