Not safe ways, but safer ways than currently. Like I said, heroine is laced with chemicals which are as bad for you as the pure drug. That, coupled with poor needle hygiene raises death rates significantly. Sell low cost, clean heroine to people who want it provided with fresh needles. Then, offer aftercare for those people. The health system will know who the addicts are and will sell to those receiving treatment. No more drug dealers, no more drug lords, no more drug crime, no more high HIV rates amongst drug users.

What would you prefer, drug addicts lining the pockets of drug lords, decreasing their chances if becoming clean while increasing their chances of HIV, or drug addicts receiving cleaner drugs, clean needles while receiving the proper support?
you have both logic and statistical evidence on your side, unfortunately the image and faux outrage from our media and politicians will win out

I agree that there are ways to make almost everything safer when it comes to drugs by legalisation and regulation
- however, for me, some things are just too grim to allow with fewer restrictions. I would legalise the weed and go after the class A dealers with the proceeds.

Yeah, it's worked brilliantly in Portugal, and we know from the past that prohibition of any substance encourages crime and profiteering.

Like you say, though, our government will not risk it in our life times.

You can't go after the class A dealers, it doesn't work. The only way to cut them out is to totally undercut them. Give users a cheaper, better alternative. Prohibition taught us this.

Just to put into context how much of a problem drugs are, by the way:

These figures are from 2011, England and Wales.

Deaths cause by alcohol related deaths: 8,748
Deaths caused by deaths caused by smoking: 79,100
Deaths caused by accidental and intentional use of any drug (other than the above): 2,652

Funny how you can buy alcohol and cigarettes over the counter but not drugs.

The majority of those drugs will be prescription. The rest heroin, coke et al.
Nobody dies smoking too much.
