...as an American who has been supporting Everton for only about 6 years now...why is that I've heard for years that McMannaman, Owen, Carragher, etc. grew up Everton fans, but came up through the RS ranks? How is this possible? I can't imagine not playing for one of the teams I supported as a kid (and still do as an adult - once you choose you don't switch). This has always made me wonder...

Rush, Fowler, Gerrard, to name a few others.

I think it was mainly to do with Evertons yooth being a bit gash or maybe they were just snidey little rats.

Different now.

Mike Walker, Walter Smith etc. had no interest in the youth at the time and always played experienced players over youth, even when we brought players through they were sold.

So you guys are saying we didn't even attempt to sign these guys? Or did they make calculated decisions to go to the dark side because they knew they could get in the team?

Don't worry mate, our youth setup is better than theirs now, we'l have loadsa players who grew up as reds over the next few years in our team

Don't think we were actively recruiting youth at the time and the RS put a lot more money into the youth system. At the time we were perennial relegation candidates and I think our hierarchy thought they had other priorities than spending money developing players. Rooney had a trial at the RS before signing for us as well. Moyes has now improved our academy infinitely and if these players were around today I think we'd have them signed up before the RS have ever heard of them.

I know that, it's one of the reasons I love supporting Everton. Philosophically, I just believe that a proper club should "grow it's own" and have as many local lads in the squad as is reasonable. It just boggles the mind how differently the histories of both clubs would be if Everton brought through all of these players.

Shocking really the players we've let slip through but they're now RS icons and the Everton way is just to say they were [Poor language removed] anyway and we never would have wanted them.

I just noticed your location, please tell me you're a Card? I've been a supporter for 20 odd years.
