Calm down

Thanks. What makes you think he can tighten up the defence given his record at Wigan and Everton to date given that we seem to still be making the same mistakes that we have all season - conceding late goals, conceding ridiculous penalties, defending to deep and conceding goals from crosses/set pieces.

With Moyes in charge I always felt that we were short of a bit of class in the final third and strength in depth i.e. problems that could be solved by buying better players. With Martinez I don't think our problems will be solved by buying players, our problems are with his system/philosophy and it therefore harder for fans to have faith.

Re transfer market. How would you rate him compared to Moyes?

Most of Martinez' transfers have been risk free - McCarthy (known quantity from Wigan), Barry (proven player, initially on loan), Lukaku (initially on loan, signed after two successful seasons in the premier league - his value has definitely gone up though), Cleverly (decent utility player on a free but no more than that), Lennon (proven premier league player).

The only unknown quantities are Besic and Funes who both have a lot of potential.

I think it boils down to Moyes was safe...Martinez is risky.

I'm not convinced he can tighten up the defence...but if he can we'll be ace.

I never EVER want to go back to the Moyes days...he was the right man at the time, but was never going to win us anything because he is simply not a winner. Far too conservative.

Transfer market? I'd say he's done quite well. You call the loans to buy safe, but didn't Moyes do the same with Pienaar and Arteta (feel like I'm forgetting another). You forgot about Del as well. Moyes was good in the market...so is Martinez.

I have recently been guilty of letting emotion rule my posting sensibility... 'Everton that' can do that to a person! But this season has seen too much 'Everton that'...and I am sad to say that under R Martinez, I cannot see us arresting our 'Everton that' moments.

That's pretty much all we have done but some people are pointing to such results as a big upturn in fortunes and demonstration of progress.

The post I was replying to was implying that stoke were doing much better than we were... So you've backed up my point that they're not!

Agreed re Moyes being too conservative. I feel like we can beat anyone under Bobby, unfortunately we can also lose to anyone no matter how well we play.

I think Everton fans are raised to support our manager and always back them to turn it around. I think this goes back to Kendall's first spell. We are always looking for that Kevin Brock moment that turns everything around. Maybe this period is Martinez' equivalent. Everton won the FA Cup that year with a developing team and the rest is history. Hopefully history repeats itself and we sign our equivalent of Reidy and Gray in the summer to give us that winning mentality. Might be all we are missing.

Fair enough, they are 5 points ahead of us in the league though with an inferior squad.

I'm more interested in where we are regardless of who is above/below us to be honest. I'm sure we agree where we are isn't good enough but I do think there is plenty to get excited about, it's a case of realising our potential

I'm generally a positive bloke. But these last few weeks i've really really struggled with Everton, and mainly Martinez. I wish I could be as positive as you. In fact I was. Not even that long ago. Then we lost to West Brom. That game appears to have been the tipping point my brain needed to go full HATE on a lot of the players, and the of course the manager.

Then West Ham happened. Obviously I was watching via stream, and I fully don't care admitting, I turned it off when they scored their first goal because it was just so very very obvious what was going to happen. Checked about 30 minutes after it finished and low and behold. I've not even seen their last two goals. Can't stand to see them.

I don't want to bring everyone down with my current mood on Everton, so i'll just say i hope you are right. In fact everyone should hope you are right because it only means good things for Everton. I wish I could have the same faith as the few, and it really does seem only a few now, who are supporting the boss and his ways. I just don't see any good in it.

Not only that but the players seem to be getting away with murder too. I'll pick the obvious one, but trust me I feel there are more, in Kevin Mirallas. Saturday was a joke. An absolute joke. But it's all gone quiet on him again.

Man i'm on full on Everton Depression Fest currently. I don't mean to be but I don't see anything to change my mind. Even a win tomorrow feels like it will only be papering cracks. Sadly I don't see myself calming down as the title suggests. We are consistently an average to poor side at the moment, and until we are consistently good again I don't think i'll be happy. And by good I mean Martinez Season 1. Anything below that is average to poor. For me anyway.

I'll try and be more positive going forward. And I was for about 70 minutes against West Ham. But it all blew up. Again.

Little Edit

And I don't beleive luck is a real thing.
Excellent post... you lucidly articulate my exact same frustrations. The inevitability of Everton doing an 'Everton that' , game after game , has done my head in. Change is needed.

Plenty to be excited about but I think we have a limited window to establish ourselves in the top 4 while the competition is unsettled. Next season might be our best opportunity to get top 4 for a long time.

Yup. Hopefully we can keep the best of our squad together, get a couple of new additions in and sort our leaky defence out over the summer

Really?!?! Martinez first year or so is the only year in the last decade I haven't felt like a significant portion of supporters wanted our manager fired.

We're less banner and protest march than most fans but I wouldn't equate our general insistence on being as casual as possible to support of the managers.

I do agree with your "looking for a turnaround moment" though. I mean we've made "Neville's tackle" into a thing and what did that ultimately get us (aside, of course, from a top ten finish which is an amazing achievement for a club of our stature).

This is exactly what I feel like. The twisted warped thing is, we have a manager who has potential, if he could address his flaws.
But his own arrogance (dare I say it, stupidity) will mean any potential will never come to pass.

Everton that.

West Ham have a worse squad than us. Stoke don't have anyone in Lukaku's league. If Stoke had Lukaku up front they would be in the top 4.

IF we had ButLand in our nets or Shawcross at centre half we may well be Top 4 material.
If Hartlepool had Messi in their ranks they'd be in the Prem.
