Cahill

Found myself thinking better without until Jelavic gave him a bit of a renaissance. Even then, he hasn't recaptured his best form. That miss against Norwich still grates, because I think we would have won with a 2-0 cushion. Still, he's a hero to me and it's hard to say we're better without him.

Honestly though, if we can get in Pienaar full-time, I'd play him behind Jelavic and Gueye on the left next season. If not, Osman, based on form. So, Cahill... bench player from now on. Sad as it is to say.

That would be interesting....Pienaar behind Jelavic. We;d have a lot of scope to move him around too and accomodate Rodwell / Osman / Barkley / Velios.

Should of been phased out as a guaranteed starter start of 2010/2011 season.

A more creative intelligent footballer on the ball makes so much difference in that position.

Of course over the years Tim made that role his and deservedly so, hia goals, his workrate, his tenacity and his general pain in the assness for defenders made him worth being in the team.

But when he isn't being effective with those abilities the team struggles because you're basically playing a man light around the opponents goal.

He still has his uses and can still even start some games (Man U away for example) but at home and against most teams in the league that extra creativity and abilty on the ball other players will give us in that position mean he should not be playing unless he is at the top of his game.

Which he hasn't been at for 2 seasons now due to injuries and age catching up with him.

He's a legend and i love him but he can't play forever

been saying for a while now needs to be dropped, however can't help but feel he is gonna score on satso want him to start.

But i'll add its more than likely he will start next week and i just hope the Tim of old shows up against them like he used to.

Truth is, most games Pienaar plays he has a free role. That's why he always opens up space for other players like Baines. If he plays in the middle with Gibson and Fellaini shielding him, he'll drift to either flank and that'll open up space for them both to get forward and support Jelavic.

Gibson is given more opportunities to shoot from distance and Fellaini to run into the box and get on the end of some crosses. That means they'll have to get up and down the pitch a lot, but we all know they have the stamina to do that, particularly Fellaini. I think it could work really well.

Cahill looked incredibly awkward on the ball against Norwich. It almost seemed like the ball was a rabid dog dragging him along. Pienaar was a far more effective option in that position against Sunderland. Imagine if Jelavic had played instead of the Straq with Pienaar's distribution? One can only imagine. But... of course Pienaar is cup-tied and I would still rather Osman out-wide with Cahill in his normal role taking pressure off from defenders for Jelavic.

Opposition teams will still see Cahill as a threat, and won't underestimate his goal-scoring capabilities no matter how poor of late.
