Hiya, I work in IT spares and can tell you assuredly you've got a good deal there.

If you want any help with part numbers for upgrades, let me know :)

Not too well up on these laptop thingymajigs,, i just gave my daughter my old acer aspire 5050, while being a perfectly good laptop the heat and noise was a bit head wrecking.

I now have an acer Travelmate 5730, €650. Just wondering in your opinion if their product is all that? (Happy with it though).

Thinking now i should gone with Toshiba.

Hiya,

both Acer and Tosh are good manufacturers, the only problem you tend to have is when they break down out of warranty. The spares for Acer have a long lead time (usually 4-6 weeks to order) and Tosh spares are verrrry expensive. So I would say you made the right choice out of the two.

From a spares point of view, your best option is the more massive companies (HP/Compaq/Dell) but their service levels whilst the machine is in warranty is awful. Having said that, I've always had HP notebooks and desktops and never had an issue with any of them.

From a service point of view, Apple is considered the best by a country mile, even when it's out of warranty. But if you're the kind of person who like to fix things yourself, this brand (along with Sony and Fujitsu) is not for you.

Cheers. I think it's good value too, but it's surprisingly ancient at 1.5 years old. I did get a years full warranty for it so I'm ok with that.

Download a program called CPU-Z. It will tell you more nerd stuff about your computer than you would ever want to know.

But the most important thing is to make sure you got what you paid for. There have been cases of computer makers advertising a chip at a specified speed, but for some reason downclock it in the bios. This program lets you see everything.

Dunno, maybe I should but on the other hand maybe I'll just get confused. Might rather just prefer to stay ignorant as say it's super and if someone questions it I'll just reply "five times".

Hmm, dunno about that. I just have a version of Everest, but I never paid for it. Maybe it's dodge :o Have a look here if you're interested: http://www.oldversion.com/download-Everest-Home-Edition-2.20.405.html

Just tried out that. It looks like it goes into some extreme detail, but for some reason it won't report my Direct X version correctly. It still thinks I am on 9.0c

And I am actually running the latest build of 11. Still, I grew up with CPU-Z, so I will stick to that!

Did a clean install and upgraded the hdd>sdd and maxed the memory. From pressing the power button to windows desktop it takes 30 sec which is pretty nice. Still have to move settings and some stuff over from the old laptop and it's worlds apart. Really happy with this. It's like a new signing.

I tried to open the casing but the screws just seem to rotate around and around. Or well, a few of them. Oh what to do?
