Wondering if anyone can help and possibly give me a few tips, pointers? Im hoping to start off a gift business, specifically a single item that will arrive boxed. Gonna get booked in with a web designer, just a bit puzzled on how i get it 'out there', obviously social media will play a part. Hoping one or two of you out there may have experience or knowledge in this field ? Cheers in advance.
Ps. Before anyone asks the gift in question does not require lube or goes near ya bum !!

I think having a social media presence is your best bet.

It might be worth asking fellow GOT'ers to spread word of mouth too...

G'wed Alan Sugar lad.

The web designer will probably say SEO, which basically will mean ranking within Google, it can cost a lot and nothing gurenteed as what is considered 'good' SEO practice today can become 'bad' in the future. It's the mine field that i work within.

The social media route could be doing it yourself or paying social influencers, it depends on budget ect.
Facebook ads are really good, same with Bing ppc, less search volume than Google but often much much cheaper.

Good news Russ, the devil is here. What you need to do it tax the fellas who are currently occupying your market.

No nothing about marketing but, assuming you're in the UK and an unincorporated business, have you registered with HMRC as self employed?
If you've incorporated a limited company, have you registeted as an employer if you're going to take a salary/pay others?
Boring but necessary.

If you don't mind me asking, what sets you apart from all the other similar companies online currently? What's your sales pitch beyond wrapping gifts?

If a 'web designer' says SEO then run a mile because most of them don't have a clue what they are talking about!

Generally speaking, I agree with what @michaelgt5 says though. Imo, what you need (in descending order of importance):
  • a product that is worthwhile and is in some way 'better' (or can be somehow believed to be 'better') than products competing for the same spending
  • a potential market that you have identified
  • visibility (this is one of the hardest steps and why people SEO before they have start toddling with their product - it is pretty tough these days to get visibility with a new site and product even with the best SEO and most vendors have no idea what the best SEO is) - you need something or some angle that people will talk about to get your market talking about you, then you get an internet buzz, then you can start to work on the web marketing side of things
  • usability (product and web presence) - you'd be amazed how many times this fails
  • perseverance - a lot of people like the idea of selling stuff online but then it all seems like hard work when it gets to the nitty-gritty (like when your SEO asks you to create some content on a particular aspect of your business)
  • luck - friend of mine who has been running a successful online business for years selling niche stuff I had no idea there was a profitable market for decided that he wanted to diversify in case the search engines knocked his main stuff on the head. He did all the right things, knows what he is talking about when it comes to web marketing....

...and his product line flopped abysmally.

Get a few out as freebies, and look for some promotion from those that can influence your audience (eg: You Tube reviewers)? Depends on what it is really I suppose!
