Bryan Oviedo

Its a question whether we have Baines and Oviedo, Baines and Garbutt or Oviedo and Garbutt.

I think Garbutt has been given assurances about next season hence why he signed that contract so really its a toss up between Oviedo and Baines?!

The two periods we looked at the races this season defence wise was when we had the LB berth filled by someone other than Baines...someone more defensively minded than Baines. Galloway earlier in the season and now Oviedo. As said above: it stands to reason you must have a greater balance between our attack minded players and what's behind them. Baines was a no brainer starter in a previous era when we badly required punch from flying FBs because our open play was fairly limited. That's not so now, and we require different qualities at FB.
mmm sounds like you're putting the blame for poor performances and defensive lapses at Baines' door - then I remind myself causation can never be implied by correlation.

I also believe Baines is showing is poor(ish) defensive side more this season, and I love Baines.

That may be doing to injuries, but its showing.

Not just Baines. But he's been part and parcel of a flaky defence that thankfully has been given a more steely approach with his, Stones and Howard's absence.

All three will still be on our books next season. Garbutt's loan hasn't gone well. I'd imagine he may be loaned out again for 6 months at least.

He's another one who looks atrocious defensive-wise.

I cant help think that we might as a team be travelling in the opposite direction to the overtly attacking FB.

Bryan Oviedo is hoping to finalise a new three-year deal with Everton .

The Blues full-back is ready to put pen to paper on a fresh contract at Goodison, with his current deal due to expire at the end of this season.

Everton have the option of extending his stay by another 12 months but Roberto Martinez wants to hand Oviedo a new contract, taking him until the end of the 2019 season.

The 25-year-old has started Everton's last three matches at left-back and helped the Blues to a hat-trick of 3-0 wins in league and cup.

Oviedo's form as kept Leighton Baines out of the team and the Costa Rica international says now is a perfect time to talk about a new deal.

"Now we have set the ideal time to negotiate a new contract; these games have helped me a lot to show more interest in me," Oviedo told www.nacion.com.

"I hope to renew with them and thank them for the opportunity they are giving me and the trust they place in me."

"One has to be grateful in life; they have shown me patience. The coach and coaching staff have always helped me and I am grateful.

"I will sign with them if everything we have spoken is in the contract.

"I want a contract that's convenient for both parties.

"For me it is very important (to play with )regularity, also the economic side; for now everything is advanced and I (will) sign for three years."

Good news. Sounds like he';s been given assurances on game time.

25 years old. Great age to sign up again on an extended deal.

I can see that putting the cat amongst the pigeons. It probably means Garbutt is out.

This makes me happy.

To be honest Dave you're being harsh there.

He always impressed in his defensive duties when he played in the Europa League last year. He's far from atrocious, though yes he does need to work on it obviously.

We've got really good options there, especially with Galloway showing he's more than capable of stepping up. It may well be a case that Garbutt is the one to make way, either on another loan or permanently.

Garbutt: looks the part, athletic player, puts a decent cross in. Downside: positionally all over the place (admittedly it comes with experience) and his time on loan looks to have been a disaster for his development (or maybe, just maybe, Fulham cant see the Emperor's new clothes?).

In that LB berth: I've seen enough this season to persuade me that Oviedo and Galloway are the most solid we have at the club. Galloway though might be fast tracked into CB duty if Stones goes. If that comes to pass I'd rather we went out and bought again rather than settle down into Oviedo/Baines next season. I think Bertrand is a type we should go for. Defensively sound and builds his game on that foundation.
