Bryan Oviedo

I reckon it's the only midfield place he's not been touted for before in these threads Woolly.

Like I said before unless he plays in the majority of games from now till say Easter and beyond its madness to give him anything more than a year contract.

I know some think he could become a left winger / midfielder, and he can do a job there at a push, but really he's a left back. I understand what you're saying about game time, but, for me, he just has to demonstrate he's fully over the leg break.

Martinez can be ruthless, but he's also loyal. I just think, if Oviedo can show he's not crocked, Martinez will prefer him to Garbutt and Garbutt's merely a back up in his plan if Oviedo doesn't prove his fitness. The ruthless part of Martinez may well have given Garbutt a long contract knowing it increases the potential for reward if we sell him. This season that contract's not really cost us much if anything.

This might be just be wishful thinking on my part because I love Bryan.

To be honest I've never seen a lot in him that I like as leftback, to much turning his back on players and losing his man.

He's very likeable for sure but as a footballer I think many see him with very blue tinted glasses after that goal and his injury.

It's such a shame he can't stay fit. He always comes into the team and does a more than adequate job. Worth a year extra I'd say

Baines / Garbutt / Galloway / Oviedo

All going for one position (Galloway apparently LB for a while yet before moving across)....

You'd have to say that he'll be gone in the summer for free and it would have been a Jan move for a small fee if not for his injury

I saw him play a lot for the U21's before he got his chance in the first team when Baines got injured and was massively underwhelmed by what I saw so at that point I'd have agreed with you. But, to me, he just seemed like a different player when he stepped up to the first team and I think he's much better than many give him credit for ( in that respect he's a bit like Osman ).

Niggly injuries and lack of match fitness aren't unusual after coming back from a bad injury. I'll trust Martinez' judgement on this one.

Totally different option to Galloway at left back and pretty versatile, if he proves his fitness definitely worth keeping and who doesn't remember his red hot spell . How much game-time is Garbutt getting at Fulham, is he gonna be really competing for a place in the next 2 years? Just asking the question like.

Wiki hasnt the full details but says Garbutt has played 5 games for Fulham.

I cant see us keeping Oviedo. We'd basically have 4 left backs then (including Galloway) and 2 is usually enough per position Baines/Garbutt and i think Garbutt is more likely to be kept than Oviedo, even just looking at injuries.

You need defenders to be fit and consistent especially if backup as if Baines was rested or out for any games we couldnt rely on oviedo being fit.

I agree the fitness issues but we also have to factor in Baines' age and own problem with his ankle no matter how boss he is and the fact Galloway is likely to be a centre back eventually. Like @riddick says the two are incomparable . So the question remains, is Garbutt likely to be a starter in our first 11? Martinez trusted an inexperienced Galloway at the end of last season instead of him.
