British sportsmanship and an end to cheating

Very naive this.

But still. I want to see an end to stuff like diving and cheating.

What about whenever the ball crosses the line? Every player claims a corner/goal kick, depending on what side they're on. What happened to being honest about things and saying "aye, that's your ball"?

Offside is a stupid rule to enforce, a linesman needs to look in two places at once which is impossible, but every time a goal goes in, sure enough there are players claiming offside whether they thought it was or not - they're appealing simply to chance their arm.

So I'd like a return to honesty please.

British sportsmanship has been going down hill for years. Most blame the foreign influence, which to a degree may have more than a grain of truth in there.
I remember thinking much the same watching clips of the 62 world cup and was at the Leeds game where the teams had to go off.
But in these things the monkey see monkey do / LCD x more and more exposure has got us to where we are today
Via Revie's Leeds, on past Francis Lee.
But the sad truth is Cheats DO prosper...It works, Leeds got 2pts for the win, Sandy got a ban and we got a severe shellacking to the rear. they gain advantage and the Reffs let them
So until FIFA jump all over it like Shawcross on Fellaini, all we can do as a Club is to try to discourage it as much as we can

You see the odd person hold their hand up every now and then. Off the top of my head we have Di Canio catching the ball, refusing to score in an empty net at GP... great bit of sportsmanship that. Probably not cheating though. Thinking along the lines of fair though.

Another one was Fowler. The ref gave a pen after it appeared Seaman brought him down. Fowler turned straight to the ref and waved his hands and said no... he tripped. The ref still awarded the pen. Did Fowler miss the pen on purpose?? Who knows...

It works both ways to though. I would love to see refs just being completely fair and neutral. To stop being swayed by the occassion, the moment and thinking of possible consequences if they make a certain decision. Being a homer !! Swayed by the home team !!

Spurs goal at old trafford anyone?? A full yard over the line.... not given

Roma being awarded a pen at Anfield years ago. It was a pen too, right decision. Pointing to the spot, then quickly bending his finger to the corner flag to only award a corner after hearing the kopites in uproar at his original decision.

Hutchison goal anyone??

I do too mate. But as long as these two are are involved, no chance.

To be honest, I don't think honesty has anything to do with the supposed anti-diving culture in Britain. I reckon it was always more of a 'manly' thing, you know? Like it isn't tough to dive about. Nothing to do with honesty or fair play, as players would always kick lumps out of one another, which isn't exactly fair, but it fits more with the manly image.

That's the problem. You can't fix it in-game until the culture changes. To get a reversal in culture, you would need to see retroactive punishment for cheating. It would start small, but it be effective. Simple things like cards given after the match for blown calls (diving, use of hands outside the box...) can be effective enough to start some movement in the opposite direction.

Just fine them.

Hit everyone in the wallet.

Both might work. Fines alone probably not. What's an appropriate fine for diving? Would you dive fine Ricky Lambert the same as you would Wayne Rooney? Would it cost more for certain teams or certain games? Goals are valuable--if I'm an owner I'll pay a player's fines if the actions turn into goals and points on the table.

I agree. I just find it silly that cheating is basically condoned by the associations.

Fine them, suspend them, dock points, force replays, whatever. Or make it a legal action (which would see me quickly losing interest). But it won't happen because the game is global and some areas do not have the issues with diving that Northern and Western Europe (and America) have.

Been going on for ever though. Before photo finish, runners would claim victory simply by dipping for the line then celebrating loudly. The most convincing celebrator won.

The games the game for me sadly.

Other teams get an advantage from it, get away with it and it's not fair, so I get annoyed that we don't do it much.

We're too nice and it annoys me.

What's driven me mad over the years is the practice of 'taking out' our influential players. Not by injuring them but by diving or rolling around after robust but fair challenges to put them on a yellow. Barry or McCarthy on an early yellow nullifies their influence for the rest of the game. It must come from the manager which suggests they don't have the wit to counter such players fair and square.

I recall Wiltshires 1st game at GP when he was clearly told to fall over every time Cahill went near him, it was almost comical at times but was sowing doubt in the refs mind, although Webb wasn't biting other refs might.

Hmmmm it seems I'm basically talking about Wenger.....(Although Hansen being allowed to put together a montage of Barry's unpunished tackles on MOTD takes ref baiting to whole new level)
