Just read the whole article, was first coined by an English man and published by the oxford dictionary.

I think it’s a British thing as opposed to something that’s an actual international term.

If grouped these days you are going to hear the U.k. And Ireland.

Good stuff though, you lean something new, I honestly never heard that before.

Do people still use it in England?

Not sure about England but I've defo heard the term in NZL. I remember an Irish mate over here hearing the British Isles being associated with Ireland, he wasn't too pleased about it!

Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, thats Britain to me like, I get that view isnt shared by some people, but its how it is in my head like.

"The term British Isles is controversial in Ireland, where there are objections to its usage due to the association of the word British with Ireland.[16] The Government of Ireland does not recognise or use the term and its embassy in London discourages its use. As a result, Britain and Ireland is used as an alternative description".

Interesting. I imagine the term "British Isles" has been around a heck of a long time though; still, can't blame the Irish Republic for getting a bit wound up by it's use, as the insinuation (at least, to the uninitiated) is that the island of Eire is part of Britain.

It is a mental debate.

The word "British" probably comes from the local Celtic word for painted or tattooed folk, which was probably the answer given to Pytheas the Greek (actually from what is now Marseilles) by people from what is now Brittany, when he asked where he was going in his voyage of discovery up the west coast of France and the main island of Britain.

Of course, the subsequent history of the island would see it invaded by the Romans (who called the occupants British), by the tribe known as Scotti (from what is now Ireland, and who invaded what is now Scotland), by the Saxons (who called the occupants Welsh), and the Vikings and the Normans (who called the occupants Saxons). The Normans then set about subjugating the Saxons, Welsh and the Irish, or in the latter case more precisely the Hiberno-Norse (as so many Vikings had settled around Dublin and used it as a base to subjugate other people). Meanwhile the Normans became Angevins, then lost Normandy and Anjou, then married into the French royal family - using it as a pretext to try to take over France as the Kings of England. A hundred years of war later and they dissolved into two warring factions based on Lancaster and York, neither of which was actually the base of either faction. The wars were then won by a family of Welsh descent, who became Kings of England and proceeded to throw out the Roman Church in favour of one thought up by a bloke from Germany. The English state then beat the French, settled America (but called the indigenous people Indians) and started a trading empire with India itself. Once they had established their global dominance, they called themselves British, but banned the British language.

It should surprise no-one that this is an island with many problems.

Explain why you think that mate. Just asking, have you ever had a look at Athletic and Real Sociedad?

There's a difference in quality in numbers between Spain and Britain mate. What may work in Spain won't necessarily work in Britain. I'd suggest there is more local quality in depth in Spain, while at the same time, as has been highlighted in the Champions League this season, the top 6-8 clubs in Britain (overall) are of a higher standard than the equivalent top 6-8 sides in Spain.
