Sell-out predicted for Brazil v Argentina MCG blockbuster
Lionel Messi looks set to return to the MCG 10 years after a virtuoso performance helped defeat the Socceroos in a friendly.

The Victorian government confirmed on Friday the 'Superclasico' - pitting world football heavyweights Argentina and Brazil - will take place at the Melbourne venue on June 9.

It is understood the Socceroos will also take on five-time world champions Brazil in a warm-up match ahead of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup which starts on June 17.

"We will have the best two teams clashing here at the MCG," state sports minister John Eren told reporters.

Brazil to play Argentina at MCG: report
Five time world champions Brazil will reportedly take on a Lionel Messi-led Argentina at the MCG in June 2017.

"I think it's going to be a blockbuster. It's going to be a sell-out."

The teams share a heated rivalry and are ranked world No.1 and No.2.

For Argentina, Messi leads a long line of world-renowned stars, including Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Javier Mascherano and Angel Di Maria.

Brazil have no shortage of high-profile names, with Neymar, Philippe Coutinho, Oscar and Dani Alves expected to draw thousands through the gates.

The match will be an important hit-out for both sides ahead of South American World Cup qualifiers to be played from late August to October.

"There is 100 years of rivalry between Argentina and Brazil. These matches are always special," Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza said in a statement.

Socceroos reportedly set to host Brazil in June
Australia could warm up for next year's FIFA Confederations Cup by hosting Brazil, according to a Brazilian newspaper.

"We look forward to meeting in Melbourne.

"Our priority is to prepare for the important World Cup qualifiers coming up in 2017 and this match and the camp will be extremely valuable."

Availability of the two country's mega-stars will be the major talking point.

Touring club sides in recent years have opted to leave their biggest names at home, sparing them the cross-continental flights during the off-season.

Off the back of an arduous club campaign, and with a 2017/18 season that finishes with the World Cup, it remains to be seen whether organisers will guarantee the availability of Messi, Neymar and others.

Should the star Argentinian play, it will be his first match at the MCG since masterminding a 1-0 defeat of Australia in a friendly in September 2007.

Not cheap.

Huge MCG soccer match confirmed
Friday, February 10, 2017

Some of world football's biggest names - including Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr - will grace the MCG on Friday June 9 in a powerhouse match-up between Brazil and Argentina.

The MCG match will see the two South American nations play the SuperClasico de las Americas, an annual contest between the teams that has been staged since 2011.

Brasil and Argentina will bring their best available talent to Australia. As well as 2016 Olympic Games Gold medal winner, Neymar Jr, fans can look forward to seeing Brazilian stars Dani Alves, Filipe Luís, Fernandinho, Philippe Coutinho and Willian.

Alongside five-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner, Messi, Argentina’s star players include Sergio Aguero, Javier Mascherano, Sergio Romero, Angel Di Maria, Pablo Zabaleta, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Correa.

For Messi, it will be the Argentinian star's first visit to the MCG since he destroyed the Socceroos as a 20-year-old in front of 70,171 fans in 2007.

A crowd of 90,000-100,000 is expected for the big clash and is the third blockbuster MCG soccer match in four years, following Liverpool v Melbourne Victory (95,446 in 2013) and Real Madrid v Manchester City (99,382 in 2015).

Boring Melburnians?? Really???

Melbourne is the beige cardigan of the Antipodes.

Melburnians are the itchy pimple on the backside of paradise.

If you end up in Melbourne you might as well hook turn yourself right into a tram and get it over with.

Am I right in believing you're not a fan of Melbourne the City.

It's the self proclaimed culture capital because it has a few T-Shirt shops, tattooed Jarg Hipster Laneway dwellers and a code of football no one else in the World understands neigh aspires to.

It's a myth of a country town that got stuck in a timewarp revolving under bleak skies with a bay like a bathtub full of dirty underpants.

Melbourne. It sucks.
