Happy Holidays Everyone!

Seeing as it's that time of year, I thought we could have a thread to clips from some Boxing Day matches of the days of yore

An Everton goal feast at Burnley

Sheffield Wednesday and Man United have a six goal thriller in 1992

Somehow Southampton and Wimbledon split 5 gives between them in 1994

And to close us out. Everton wallop The Boro in 1995

Times have changed. The tackle leading to Kanchelskis goal would probably be a straight red nowadays.

I remember my first boxing day game back in 1977. I'd got the Everton umbro double diamond away kit as a present (the EFC on the shirt is my avatar) and me and my Dad had tickets in the top balcony to watch title chasing Everton (unbeaten in 20 league and cup games) take on a Man Utd team from the bottom half of the league who I'd watched on match of the day the previous week getting thrashed 4-0 at home by Forest, what could possibly go wrong.....?

Anyway here's some footage of a memorable boxing day Belfast derby, Glentoran v Linfield.

My first Boxing Day game as well 🙈🙈

My first ever time at goodison was a Boxing Day game v Sheffield Wednesday in 1993. We lost 2-0. It was grim.
Was that the game when Carlton Palmer scored with a header outside the box? Yeah, that was grim. At least my first boxing day game was played in front of a massive crowd and a brilliant atmosphere (at least at the start of the game!), I doubt goodison was even half full for your first match?

Yeah it was the Carlton Palmer long range header lol

Can’t really remember what the attendance was like but we were awful. I think it was just after Kendall Mk II had just left and Jimmy Gabriel was caretaker. Shortly before Walker coming in. It wasn’t a good atmosphere in the ground at all

First one I remember was winning 2-1 at Sunderland Boxing Day 1984 but the first one I attended was beating Man Utd 3-1 a year later with 2 Graeme Sharp goals and one from Gary Lineker after conceding the customary very early goal as we bizarrely did many times in 85/86. I was only a kid then and have never seen the goals anywhere since. It was played during the infamous tv blackout of that season.

Another one which stands out for the wrong reasons was in 1994 in terrible conditions against Sheff Wed and us going a goal up through Big Dunc. We then proceeded to concede 2 goals in a minute after just going 6 games without letting a goal in! Everton that! We ended up getting hammered 4-1 to a bang average side.

I had the full 90 mins of that boxing day game v United in 85/86 on dvd, it was converted from a vhs release by man utd at the time with no commentary, bought it about 10 years ago from an online retro football dvd seller.
Two of our goals were headers and one was a scrappy one by Lineker, we were 3-1 up by about 50mins.

I was 14 and I’m sure I got PTSD from that match!

It was my second season of going to the games. I'd seen us lose the odd home game (Forest on the opening day '77 is one that really stands out), but I'd never seen us take a pasting like that. I just remember sitting up there in the T.B. in stunned silence watching the Man Utd fans bouncing around the Park End every time they scored. I think we were 5-0 down by the hour mark? My memory is probably a bit hazy now, but I don't even recall them even actually playing that well despite the scoreline, just everything they hit seemed to go in! I'm sure we had enough chances to score 6 ourselves? Anyway, we did beat them at Old Trafford in the return game!

Any chance you can send me a link to that site mate? Wouldn't mind getting hold of that game.

Only home game I missed that season as my family took us away for Christmas that year.

The game at Old Trafford was great though - a Dave Thomas/ Bob Latchford masterclass!
