Boxing Day at Goodison....the highs and the lows.

i will start with the low.

1977.

After catching a Tartar and being hammered at home on the opening day by newly promoted Forest, the Blues went on a long unbeaten run which had us laying second behind them come Boxing Day and the visit of Manchester United.

Hopes were sky high that festive season as the much maligned Gordon Lee had us playing superb stuff and Big Bob was knocking in Dave Thomas's inch perfect crosses for fun.

Alas the wheels came off the wagon and we slumped to a 6-2 defeat :(

The high?

1985 against the same opposition.

They had won their first ten games under Big Ron that season and opened up a mighty gap over both us and the RS.

However, their stride had shortened as winter started to bite and we had narrowed the gap by the time they arrived here on Boxing Day.

They took the lead IIRC but goals from Sharpy, Lineker and little Inchy turned it round and we won 3-1 ;)

Here's hoping the Blues give us a good show this Boxing Day and lift the gloom which has descended on us lately :)

(I swear....if any of you buggers point out any memory lapses in this account I will come round your house Chrustmas Eve and knock your Christmas Tree over....:p)

Merry Christmas to all Evertonians.....no matter where in the world you are.

From Formby to Finland...from Norris Green to New Zealand...from Gatacre to God's Own Oz....from the United States of Kirkby to the United States of America....from Huyton to Holland....from Everton Vale to the Emerald Isle......we love you all :pint2:

The 2 - 6 result was just about the pits. Most miserable Boxing Day ever with a lousy journey back to Ireland and the bitterness of half digested turkey. Damn you, Eberton.

I remember winning 1-0 against Villa ( think it was Sharp or Sheedy who scored ) and Villa thought they had scored ( as the ball was 2 yards over the line ) but the ref and linesman didn't see it. That's my memory of boxing day games anyway ;)

Everton 1 Coventry 2 1999/2000 season. I think from memory Scott Gemmil equalised late on only for Coventry to pinch it in injury time

Didn't go to the 2-6 game for some reason as that was one of the seasons I most went to the match. Do remember it well though.
Went to the 85 match with my cousin. we had to hitch a lift through the tunnel from Birkenhead. Got picked up by 2 Irish blues who were sound as. Arranged to meet us after the match and dropped us off in plazzy land again.

Boxing day is the first fixture i look for when the fixtures are announced. At home boxing day is brilliant. All day on the ale, the match, brilliant.
My particular fave was Wigan 2 years ago although the game was poor, my son was born on the 21st so i wetted the babys head boxing day, Everton won, Liverpool lost in tge late game which resulted in my coupon winning about 150 quid. Perfect.

Remember this one clearly, they came on a high and were near the top of the league, think they even filled there end for once but we battered them and they never recovered.
I think we injured Junhinho too.

He was in a heap for a long time on the ground.
