Mate with all due respect, football isn't a contact sport it's is a collision sport. If you've never played, you have no idea what you're talking about. I still have health issues from playing my whole life (Knees, back, multiple concussions). This whole Rugby is tougher cuz they don't wear pads is complete BS. Every kid in America plays tackle football in the yard or street without pads just like Rugby. You don't tackle the same way. You can't. A kid from Rutgers University just got paralyzed from the neck down last Saturday. Sadly, although fairly rare, it's not that rare.

The violence in the NFL and college football is getting scary simply because the players are so much bigger and faster than they used to be. It's like being in a car collision multiple times every game. TBH as much I love (American) Football, if I had a son I'm not sure I would encourage him to play these days. That's not a diss at Soccer, it's just a fact. Soccer players may get leg injuries just as much, but not head injuries for the most part.

This is a really good article from Malcolm Gladwell of the New Yorker about this subject. It's pretty sobering. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/10/19/091019fa_fact_gladwell

I aint talkin' Ra-Ra ruggers with Tomlinson-Banksworthy and Smidger, I'm talkin Rugby League, 80 minutes of non stop hits with very few breaks in the play.

N.Z. play England on Saturday morning (11 a.m. here) I think that you will find that it is a bit more than kids playing contact football, Englands captain burst his bicep last week, how many times have you heard of that happening ?

even in union... Lions captain Brian O'Driscoll was speared by 2 Maori in the opening test match against the all blacks for daring to accept the challenge laid down during the Haka, he had tried to be respectfull by throwing a leaf in the wind which is a traditional acceptance, to not do so would have been an insult and be gloves off. They targetted him at the kick off, lifted him, upended him and drove him to the ground, it was pure luck that he wasn't injured worse, he missed the rest of the tour and was lucky he wasn't paralysed tbh.

Watch 1 of the tests between England, Australia, New Zealand & Papua New Guinea over the coming weeks and you'll change your opinion. These guys bash skulls together, let alone Kevlar lids.

I'm not saying Rugby isn't physical, I'm saying you can't compare the two, and you certainly can't make the case that American Football is LESS violent than Rugby. It just isn't.

Tell me if you've ever seen this in Rugby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAR_zEvT7dM

well yu have people doing this shiz as well each week as well as the big hits.

this is Terry Newton, who hung himself about 3 weeks ago, after this game he received death threats and he put a couple of players out for months, sean long was out for ages tbh.

2nd 'tackle' on this vid is described by mcdermott as the highlight of his wigan career, the guy he laid out actually was/is an aussie legend and hardman.

I told my wife this past weekend that I wouldn't be surprised if we saw someone killed on a gridiron football field in my lifetime.

Players are bigger, faster, & stronger than they were in the early days of the NFL.

I just hope it doesn't happen.

Seen some horror injuries over the years. I remember some guys leg bending one way, then twisting the other. I almost threw up.

Did he play for the 49'ers? The guy i saw get injured played for them. It was so bad someone took their helmet off and puked.

smh...

Here it is. If you get quesy when seeing bad leg breaks don't watch this.

The difference between football and rugby is that rugby players are smaller and built more for endurance, they have to go 40 minutes with very few breaks in play. The NFL is all short bursts for a few seconds fast twitch stuff. Its like comparting a 100M sprinter with a 1500M runner. A 300lb star NFL player wouldn't last 5 minutes on a rubgy field and a good rugby player wouldn't last 5 minutes on an NFL field.

In the 70s 1st starting in football the biggest players on the field were usually no bigger than 250lbs. Now its 100lbs heavier and the players are faster. It a rugby player tired to tackle like an NFL player, head first lauching yourself like a missle he'd be knocked out before the 1st minute.

Oh and Schelerth just another ESPN ex-NFLer numbskull. The same guy who boycotted the media as a Bronco is now card carrying member of the media.

The only ex-NFL guy I like on ESPN is Trent Dilfer, he's their best analyst by a mile so naturally he's 2nd choise to John "I refuse to say anything critical as I might go back into coaching any day now" Gruden.
