Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian
The Unobstructed View
Mixed views on this news of massive redundancies and the knock on effect (estimated 12,000) in the supply line).
Firstly, it is sad that another large manufacturer is going down the pan, citing losing out on a contract for Thames Link to foreign competitors. The manufacturing base of this country could.... not too long ago, have rebuilt the railways and given us one of the most efficient systems in the world, the outer loop would've made Japans system look like the Indian State Railway in comparison alone.
In this world driven by shareholders and price though a different option has been chosen, more than likely the only way that Bombardier could've competed is if the workers had foregone pay rises (more than likely have done already) and offered to work shifts for day rate, they are all probably having to work long hours to make ends meet anyway, but hey there'll be those that say, "if that's what's needed to secure your job then that's what has to be done" ignoring the fact that they wiull be on a low wage to start with.
Secondly though, I have worked somewhere that was going to be taken over by these guys, their intention was to shut the place down and asset strip it, with the high profit work heading to Derby (machines as well but not the workers), the rest being discarded/ sold off to pay for the buyout.
So, the workers down there have been happy to take that work from someone else in the past..... what goes around comes around springs to mind !!
One thing is for certain though, a member of the Board will be getting his dividend and bonus.....
After systematically taking apart British Industry when in Government, he went to Bombardier to set about doing it to line his own pockets.
