A video has revealed Siberian weather so extreme that it can freeze boiling water instantaneously.

A severe frost has affected large parts of Russia, leading to record low temperatures across the country.

he video from Reuters shows a Novosibirsk resident demonstrating the level of cold by throwing a pot of boiling water from his top floor apartment balcony.

The water turns into a cloud of frozen droplets as soon as it hits the air - before throwing the water the man featured in the video shows a temperature reading on his iPhone of -41C.

Temperatures have fallen to -50C in the far eastern regions of Russia, with -20C recorded in central parts.

Meteorologists say that many regions are recording their lowest temperatures for more than half a century.

No doubt that is cold, but there is much colder out there. I was lucky enough to get out of Fairbanks in Alaska before it got really cold ( was there and the temps were a mild -15C). The residents up there often get -50C and in the cold winters it has been down to -55 to -60C.

Mind you, it is all cold enough to freeze your balls off.

My car told me it was -13c a couple of years ago, I think the weather man said it was -9c. It was cold, but life didn't change much from -3 downwards.

Bad heating bill that year

If you think Novosibirsk is cold, try going to Oymyakon or Verkhoyansk. These two have been slugging it out for years for the title of coldest inhabited town in the world. Personally my money is on Verkhoyansk.

It's -16c here today (with wind chill, my weather station out on the balcony reads -24.4c) but we've already reached as low as -25c this winter. Over in Siberia, Yakutsk is presently showing -44c.

To be brutally honest, there's not that much difference once you reach -10c or so. Your cold as fook then anyway, so the additional degrees colder don't seem that harsh - your body is already reacting and trying to cope once you're into the -10 bracket. It always feels a lot worse - colder - when the winter kicks in, and you get the first wave of sub-zero and icy winds. Once the worst comes around Dec, Jan, Feb you're usually acclimatised and it doesn't feel so bad.

But you can get complacent - I do a few times every winter. Only yesterday, I stepped of the aircraft on arrival back here and mooched off and onto the waiting bus to the terminal. I didn't even bother putting hat, gloves etc on despite it being -16c. Had a killer headache by the time I got home, though (n)
