Bob Latchford

I stand corrected. Even stranger that he went to play for a small Dutch team, unless he'd made enough at Everton to put his feet up ?

I doubt he made enough to put his feet up, I agree a strange decision, but he was and is his own man!

Having seen him a few times doing after dinner stuff , he says that his wife was from there and that played a big part in him going there and deciding to live there . He doesn't really expand on it anyomre than that and doesn't really say anythng about his time paying for Breda, which again is strange. But as you say he's his own man.

Not a legend for me ,part of a team that went very close to winning things but I always thought we payed too big a price for him when Kendall went in the other direction.
Not knocking the fella but needed more fire in his belly to be the real deal and I always judge true greats for the blues were the ones who could score goals against the RS ,Bally ,Kingy and even Cahill.People always recall the "Bobby Latchford walks on water" but in his later years "One step at a time Bob Latchford thats all were asking of you" was being aired on the street.
I look back on those days in the seventies and the stand out player for me was Dobbo Im sure he use to walk onto the pitch wearing a smoking jacket and a cravat pure class.
It was like he was in another time zone at times ; and a cracking shot :

What I find a bit strange about Latchford is that he quietly left us to go and play for the tiny Dutch team, Breda, where his wife is from . It just wouldn't happen today with the amount of money in the game .

He actually left us to join Swansea who had just been promoted to the first division under toshack in 81-82

He'd had a lot of injuries, which blighted his latter years at Goodison. He became slow, and possibly a little overweight.

Think he did ok at Swansea, though. I remember him scoring a hat trick on his debut for them on the opening day (is that correct?), and he scored on his return to Goodison. We won 3-1, though and I think a very young Sharpy scored twice for us.

I also remember him playing for Coventry at Goodison in 84-85, although he was deffo getting on a bit then and was even slower! Also remember Mick Lyons playing at Goodison that season as captain of Sheff Wed. In fact that was the day marwood did Inchy!

When Latch scored for Swansea, it was a header, I think at the Street End, he had a big clap from the crowd.

It was a bit surreal. Not sure I've ever seen a goal against us clapped by our fans before, or since.

I seem to remember Swansea having a number of our ex-players in that game. They had Dai Davies in goal (haha, remember him?), and was it Neil Robinson? at full back, a ginger haired lad. He played for us in the league cup final in 77. Not sure if they also had Garry Stanley too, or am I just making that up?!

I can't deffo say for certain that he played in this game, but I also know dogs-nose Tommy Smith played for them that season too

One memory I have of Big Bob is of a game V QPR in the mid 70s. It was 1 - 1, and Latchford had been marked out of the game right until the 90th minute, when he turned the QPR centre half and smashed the winning goal into the Street End to give us a 2 - 1 victory. Bedlam on the terraces!

:)

I remember that game.

That was the season we should have been champions in 1974/75.

An almost telepathic understanding between Thomas and Latchford played a big part in Bobs goals. By rights Thomas should have been permanently slipping over as he only ever wore mouldees. He also should have been seriously hurt too as he never wore shin pads. What I find a bit strange about Latchford is that he quietly left us to go and play for the tiny Dutch team, Breda, where his wife is from . It just wouldn't happen today with the amount of money in the game .

I thought he left us for Swansea.

Paul Mariner scored a great goal for Ipswich at Goodison in 1980 to make it 4-1 for them......practically the entire stadium stood up and applauded.

Ipswich came back to town a couple of weeks later in a 6th round F.A. cup tie.

Big Bob exacted revenge that day ;)

Wasn't at the league game, so I didn't see that. Was at the cup game though. Was it 2-0 or 2-1 in the QF? We went out to west ham the next round

Like him; loved his 30. BUT do recall one Anfield derby, last couple of minutes 0 - 0. One on one with Clemence and fluffed it. Then smiled at Clemence. Could cheerfully have kicked him. Unreasonable maybe but I prefer players who hate their mistakes.
recall that ,should have scored, in fairness outside Lineker he was the best in the area that we have had since i have been watching.

1973-74 - 13 apps, 7 goals
1974-75 - 36 apps, 17 goals
1975-76 - 31 apps, 12 goals
1976-77 - 36 apps, 17 goals
1977-78 - 39 apps, 30 goals
1978-79 - 36 apps, 11 goals
1979-80 - 26 apps, 6 goals
1980-81 - 19 apps (1 as sub), 6 goals
No one was up to Dixie's standards, but Bob's record is pretty good, I still maintain that with a bit more effort he
could and should have much, much better, thanks for giving me his league goal tallies.
