Bizarre, I'm Optimistic

You only had to look at the lads sitting in the stands yesterday to see our strength in depth. Haven't got a worry about us beating the big teams at home who come and have a go but it's how we break down the smaller clubs who park the bus like Watford and Liverpool that will ultimately decide where we finish. We need more consistency from Rom, Ross and Del and we'll be flying.
I see what you did there, and I like it.

Might be pushing the optimism too far here, but if you look at the games we've got from now until Christmas, we could be top going into 2016! Or, more realistically, at least top 4.

If we manage a win against United, and then lose/draw against Arsenal, we have 9 games after that that are all eminently winnable. Obviously we won't win them all but we could be hoping for 20+ points from the lot.

For context, that's:

EvertonvSunderland
West HamvEverton
Everton
vAston Villa
BournemouthvEverton
Everton
vCrystal Palace
NorwichvEverton
Everton
vLeicester
NewcastlevEverton
Everton
vStoke

And with Stones, Coleman, Baines, and Cleverley all due back soon I think we're in a great position to push on. Would also be nice to think that we might pick up a reinforcement or two in January.

Cue us going on a 9 match losing streak starting at home to Sunderland.

I don't live on Merseyside any more and I took my lad to his first game a couple of years ago on Boxing Day. Sunderland at home. I thought I'd be on safe ground, we hadn't lost at home in the calendar year. Cue 1-0 loss :(

It is a run if games like this where we need to start taking advantage. A top 4 side wins all of those home games for a start. We don't want to draw away a brilliant opportunity to really make a statement in the table.

For me, one of two things was going to happen this season; either we'd get worse or we'd improve. Thankfully we've improved, but still with some pulling up of socks and pulling out of fingers to be done in some aspects.

I think our resilience in rejecting Chelsea's advances has done us the world of good. Never mind showing the rest of the world, Everton has shown itself that it still has clout and respect.

Let's compare this summer with the summer Rooney was sold - as bad as it was to lose him, the rest of the squad pulled together for 04/05 and did something great.

Paradoxically, I don't think we'd have got 4th if Wayne had stayed. I'd still have preferred to see him stay though.

So our handling of Chelsea has galvanised a spirit that was waning and we've benefitted from that, while keeping Stones too.

Interesting 3 games and 7 points later and we are getting there. Leicester are top of the league, everybody looks beatable, and I honestly still think that if we keep Stones, Barkley, Deulofeu and Lukaku fit (and don't sell any of them) we can do something remarkable this season. If Martinez can get Wigan to win the cup, can he get Everton to win the league? Probably not, but we can sure as hell finish in the top 4.

It's good to be optimistic because without optimism the more realistic reality that we will lose 1 or 2 of our star players next season becomes apparent .

Top 4 is only way i can see us keeping hold of everyone, roberto said as much in his interview.
