Otto I deserves a mention, essentially established the German heartland and imperial ideal.

…..the Iron Chancellor, unification of Germany and throw in a bit of Prussia too. A-Level history in 1975 was a long time ago but I remember liking OvB. Not forgetting they named a famous battleship after him, ‘Sink the Bismark’ is a fine film.

Democracy and the USA - irony. A choice of two parties, one more extreme right wing than the other both of whom serve to look after the interests of the wealthy string pullers. Having a choice between two cheeks of the same fat hairy behind is hardly democracy.

Ditto the UK, but three parties all slightly less right wing.

Probably there would have been - his system was the problem.

He built a system that required a decent man at the top to run things, someone who was willing to seek out advice and consensus and listen to his advisors (those he liked and those he didnt). This system lasted for a sum total of one decent ruler and 90 days of a dying one; the next cab on the rank was spoiled and jealous man-child and so things went tits up for Bismarck first, then Germany, then Europe and finally the idiot Kaiser himself.

Agreed it was the human flaw in the system mate. Interesting that was the chink in all the great monarchy's ultimately.
