Anyone know anything about bikes? My 10 year olds bike has the twist type gear change but even i can't make them change. The cables aren't stuck and they move easily if you simultaneously manually adjust the deralliers.
Can't understand why i can't get them to twist

10 years is quite long in bike years, you should probably be looking for a new one

Have you taken the shifter apart to see how it's working without the handlebar covers on? I'm not that familiar with twist shifters as they're usually used on mountain bikes rather than road bikes, but the Sheldon Brown site has lots of good info on bike repair and maintenance.

Probably. Its a kids bike and they don't look after anything.
What's a toggle chain?

The 'arl Sturmey Archer 3 gear thing

Stupid question but, you aren't trying to twist the whole thing are you, as it's only the bit near the gear indicator that moves, check the cable isn't slipping at the deraileur end as well, or slipped as there could be some slack.

im sure it's to do with the tensioning on the cables mate to be honest, need to slacken the tension a bit or you risk stretching the cables which will then render them useless. BUT................i could be wrong so don't take my advice.

Don't envy kids riding the things they do. My nieces have a bike each and they weigh more than my road bikes. Blooming great tanks they are. Can't make it easy for them to learn to ride the things.
