David Moyes has confirmed that Victor Anichebe will be out for the rest of the season.
The striker damaged the cartilage in his right knee when challenged by Newcastle's Kevin Nolan during the game at St James' Park on 22 February.
And the Everton manager revealed his worst fears had been realised when the Nigerian was ruled out for the remainder of the 2008/09 campaign.
Anichebe had a scan on the knee and saw a specialist in London on Wednesday, but with the results of the scan proving inconclusive, Anichebe will now undergo exploratory surgery.
Effectively, that means a small camera is inserted into the joint to closely examine the affected area.

Everton boss, David Moyes said: "Victor will have an operation.
"He's damaged his cartilage and is out for the season. It's a blow for the boy as he'd just got back into the team, and it's another player we have lost."
Anichebe joins Yakubu and Mikel Arteta in the list of players who will be out for the season.

The list is endless mate. Wont be surprised if we lose more influencial players from now until May, not that i consider Vic to be an influencial player.

Well, come to think about it, i am struggling to be honest. Shows the need for us to get a quality out and out right winger in during the summer. Aaron Lennon anybody??

No thanks. Hes good, but would cost a lot and hes very hit and miss. But a right winger MUST be our number 1 target. Then we can get The Mout, Love and Riquelme.

We already made 2 huge signings in the summer. Some lad called Mikel Arteta and Yakubu, they will be like new signings.
