Better off not in Europe?

I enjoyed the Europa League this year, up until the last game.

I have said before though that I dont think it is quite the right format yet, I think the group stages are fine, but the champions league teams should not drop into it. There should be more places for the top leagues; like Spain, England, Germany, etc and less places for the lesser leagues, like; Slovenia, Slovakia and Moldova.

I think this would give the competition more value and make it more exciting for the viewers as there would be more "high profile" games.

Ideally we should be better off in Europe, because it gives us another competition to win, but our league form has suffered this year and we went out early in both domestic cups. Whilst that cant all be blamed on the Europa League, it was a contributing factor.
Sorry, but have to disagree with that. The rot started to set in when countries were first allowed 3 or 4 teams in the Champions league, and also got seeded. That is the root of the problem, they wanted a European super league and UEFA gave it to them. It is designed to keep the status quo happy and kill off real competition
I would much rather see a country from Moldova, Slovenia etc get an equal opportunity to progress via luck of the draw than see Bayern, Real, Barca etc in the semi finals every year.

All those countries have basically 1 spot, and the have to start from the preliminary rounds in June or some ridiculous thing like that.

Spot on.

My opinion is that English clubs struggle with the Europa League because the teams we send to it are not good enough to compete in Europe nor equipped to balance a Europa League run with their domestic commitments.

And this is due to the fact, as you allude to, that the best teams, the ones which occupied two of the first three places, are going to the CL instead of the once very strong second tier completion, the UEFA Cup.

Teams finishing fifth and below in the EPL should not be in Europe by dint of league position.

Then there is the ludicrous policy of losing Cup finalists going to the EL.

It reached farcical levels last season when Hull City went into the EL simply because they had been beaten in the F.A. Cup Final by a team which finished a remote fourth in the league.

A scenario which will in all likelihood be repeated next season with Aston Villa.

The idea of the beaten finalists going into the old ECWC had some merit if they had been beaten by the Champions completing the Double.....but the current arrangement is just bonkers.

At this moment in time Villa cannot even be sure of playing in the top flight next season.

Yet they are already sure of playing in the Europa League no matter what the Wembley result because Arsenal will be in the CL.

And if they do get relegated how the heck will they juggle the demands of a 46 game Championship marathon with the Europa League?

I find it amazing that some fans don't want the club they support to win trophies!
I mean, why else are we watching Everton? Surely it is because we want to win things?
As far as I am concerned, the more games Everton are involved in, the better. It means we are doing well and gives us a chance of winning honours - the foundation of our club.
I was lucky enough to see Everton win things in the 80s and the amount of games per season never seemed to be a problem then so why is a problem now? We had a smaller squad then too!
For me, a club like Everton should be in/or competing for European football EVERY single year.
We are a big club and should be playing other big clubs on an international scale.
Some fans get upset that we get called a small club yet treat us as one with their lack of ambition regarding the search for trophies.
Yes, I want us to compete in the European Cup but just now that's not happening so let's go for the next biggest thing.
And let's also challenge for all domestic cups - it has been rather a while since we won one after all :-(

Villa will not qualify as losing finalists.

That's not really what I am saying, in the Champions league, some countries get 4 places. That doesn't happen in the Europa, that's what I think would improve it, rather than teams dropping in from the champions league.

Also the early rounds of the Europa league and even half of the teams in the group stage, most neutral fans won't be interested in watching.

I don't think there will be many Europa games that I will watch next season, now Everton are not in it

We were rubbish before EL competition even started this season, so that can hardly be used as an excuse.

I don't get some fans. Have a bit of ambition why don't you? We want the profile of the club to be raised, playing in Europe is a great way to do that. I want us in Europe every year. If it can't be CL, then EL. You also tend to get better at these things with practise. Shame we won't be in it next year.

"It has been a big demand to be in Europe and the domestic competitions and I think that there has been a mental fatigue from that."

Martinez, post match comments today.
