The Bethesda name doesn't really imply much to live up to, in my opinion.

I've said it before how their games always leave me underwhelmed. As always though, I give games a chance, and Brink especially looks really refreshing and potentially a lot of fun.

See, the Bethesda name, for me, is synonymous with absolute quality! Yeah, Oblivion was their poorest effort , but the fact that was still an awesome game shows just how strong they are.

Still, I understand where you are coming from, there are plenty of games and series out there that I dislike that lots of people like.

I have the exact same problem with Rockstar. I liked Vice City, but that aside I've never even slightly enjoyed any of the games they've published.

And it's not some kind of arbitrary nonconformism, it's just I really think they're massively overrated. Nothing wrong with digging either publisher, and their respective franchises, but the way the critics foam over them is just disproportionate and excessive in my honest opinion.

Bioware are the western RPG masters for me, and pretty much every sandbox game I've ever played I've really enjoyed and have preferred to GTA. So it's not that I dislike the genres of these games.

The common criticism I have with both is that their games are quite boring, both gameplay and story-wise. My other criticism of Bethesda -- an obvious one; their dated and buggy engine. This especially gets on my nerves, as any game without the behemothic label of Bethesda or Rockstar would be critically mauled for being so buggy, and yet the Fallout games* -- and Red Dead Redemption too -- were buggy but critically praised. I'm a firm believer that games should be finished when they're released, and not sold too early with a "we can patch it later" attitude.

Obviously opinions are opinions, but I'm just quite bemused as to how I can be in the vast minority with these ones. I keep thinking I'm missing something when I play RDR, GTA, Oblivion, Fallout and so on. Why did everyone else love them? Ah well, to each their own. :D

*admittedly New Vegas did take a bit of a critical hit with the buggyness, but the point's still valid.

Both

However, I was one of the first people to play online on an xbox. I played online for the 1st Halo.

I was one of the first people to finger a hedgehog.

In other words, I'd say our achievements are both equally impressive and irrelevant. Mine was definitely more fun though, even speaking as a raging Halo fanboy.

You are still a gaming baby.

Until you can claim you were dialing up your mates 9600 baud modem to do some Wolf 3D/Doom/Descent/Terminal Velocity deathmatching then you can come back to me.

In the Bethesda world, Morrowind craps all over Oblivion in every single respect with the sole exception of graphic quality.

I agree with RFUS, you need to play more games if Oblivion tops your list.

I was even in a clan too. 'twas called BCRCMCF.

No but there are other games that are higher on the list. The reason I rate Oblivion sooo high, is that it kept me playing pretty consistently for over a year (maybe even two years). Most games dont do that.

Yeah well Im not a loser and I dont spend all my time on video games.

Touché. No arguments here, either.

I've been gaming for as long as I can remember, and I'm quite fond of a lot of retro games. But in terms of what I played as a kid, it was a bit of SNES, and a lot of N64/PS1/Game Boy. Hardly retro like your hardcore self, but I reckon I've played enough in my time to cast an informed opinion on the medium.

Ahh, some of my best memories where editing the autoexec.bat and config.sys files to try and get enough base memory free to play games. Upgrading from a 8088 to a 286SX to a 386SX to a 386DX then DX2, then finally a 486 and the magnificent P100!!!!

Back in those days are my best 'gaming' memories. Of course I don't have time for games anymore, with 4 kids bouncing off the walls. I can only play the violent mature games (read the Fallout/GTA/Mass Effect/Assasins Creed at night so they cant watch and end up with nightmares (my eldest, a few months ago dreamed Spartans (the Halo ones, not the greek ones) were after him.)
