Penalties! What a great thread!, I reckon we’ve all seen some good bad and different - in fairness I reckon our overall recent experience in games that go to pens in a knock out competition has improved but I’m probably thinking we’ve lost more than we’ve won when it gets to this stage, The big ones ofthe semi against Man U and away at Chelsea are matched by Fiorentina, Southampton........going back I remember Bristol as being another place we’ve done a first...with us losing to both City and Rovers in a shoot out in League Cup games ( I remember when a young Ellington ran us ragged that night at Robers). Others will no doubt have different memories of our I different success from the spot.
Regarding penalties....My grandad once told me (another reason why he hated the [Poor language removed].....there were many to be fair!). and what summed up our respective luck could be described by our differing fates in European games. Before away goals and pens came in.....Liverpool won a European Cup game won on the toss of a coin to go through. The first toss went against them but allegedly it didn’t fall flat on the shitty mud that was Anfield despite the complaints the referee agreed to a second toss. No surprises on the winning team.
So they changed the rules to decide games on penalties instead of tossing a coin The first team to lose a European shoot out? You know who....v Borussia Monchangladbach in 71. Couldn’t be bothered checking .....but he was rarely wrong in such like this! Happy to be corrected if not true!!
But back to the best way...Yaya Toure hasnever missed one of those who have taken over ten in the PL. Unswortb was more than decent of those Ive seen - like Ray Stewart- as is Baines and Tricky. Beattie rarely missed in his career either.....but I like Gallagher at Preston. He turns his back towards his own goal....spins and takes three strides and simply blammo’s it! Mirallas, Lukaku, Richarlison, Siggy and a host of others may have wished they’d taken that option!
