Gerrard is massively overhyped. If you're thinking purely of premier league exploits (I know everyone forgets that Scholes (twice) and Lampard won the CL as well, if you believed the press Gerrard is the only person to ever score in a final ever) then Gerrard hasn't even won the thing sand has one season of plus 20 goals? What is it exactly that makes him great then. He turned up for some big games (although he lost a lot more than anyone wants to admit) and scored some belters, mostly against Everton. Like Liverpool though he wasn't consistent. God mode whenever Everton turned up but for Wigan away he'd be completely anonymous.
Scholes Lampard Beckham Carrick, have all won it more, all been far more consistent and Lampard scored bags more. Why is Gerrard even in the conversation? If he's spent his career at Southampton no one would care about him. His natural talent has been dwarfed by the Gerrard myth propagated by the media to keep Liverpool relevant. Alonso carried him for years and he regularly got dominated by the lesser lights of the league. One free kick or pen though and it was all ok. He didn't even register on the radar of the top class midfielders like Keane Scholes Vieira or Fabregas. It was only when paired with Alonso and Mascherano other teams started to worry. Half of Liverpool's big wins he 'inspired' came as a pure shock to the opposition as they'd been in total control then Gerrard would bang in 30 yarder to win it. Good for the big moments but no consistency so nowhere near players who were controlling midfield a every week to win trophies.
