Allardyce Out
For me, Euro 96. At least it was the last time I didn't automatically self hate myself for being English and a football fan - Three Lions, incredible atmospheres throughout, cracking 90s kits (that grey England kit was fantastic), proper aceness.

Euro 96 was incredible.

Never known the country like it and may never again.

I went to two games at Hillsbrough too.

Denmark (the holders) vs Portugal
Was a beautiful day and I went with my next door neighbours and we sat right next to the Portugal fans. I'd never heard anything like it. So loud and colourful. They did pyro right. Finished 1-1. I think Brian Laudrup for Denmark and I can't remember who scored for Portugal.

Then it was:

Croatia vs Denmark.
That's right the Davor Suker chip match. I didn't know too much about a few of the Croatian lads before the game but my god what a generation of players. Suker, Prosinecki, Boban and so many more. When Suker tried to lob Peter Schmeichel from the half way line we were right behind it and it looked in! And then he did from a bit closer later on. So good.
A particular highlight of this match was my dad seeing this lad warming up for Denmark and going 'he looks good. They should get him on'. Yeah it was Mikkel Beck who went on to stink out Middlesbrough! I've never let him forget it.

Brilliant days.

Was doing my head in, Sa Pinto scored for Portugal.

I was only 7/8 at the time of the 2002 World Cup and had just become really obsessed with football at that point, so it was boss.

World Cup 86. There was something special about the commentators sounding miles away and the pictures too. For me it was the media darlings, Robson and Wilkins going out and the blues coming in. I still think that Argentina defeat was one of the hardest ever to take.

I went to the Denmark-Croatia game, too. Tremendous atmosphere and terrific football from the Croats. But the tournament as a whole not as good as Euro 2000 (remember the Abel Xavier handball?). Really enjoyed Japan-Korea because of the crazy kick-off times and the epicly bent refereeing that allowed South Korea to get so far!
