Best Ever Signings ?

But it doesn't have to be.

Just because you don't want to read the opening post doesn't mean that people who do are wrong.
Shakes head in disbelief! All the title says is 'Best ever signings'. Now try to follow this - it does NOT say: 'within your lifetime, or anything else similar. Jeez...

Not just their contribution they gave to the team, but the frisson of excitement it gave you personally that they signed. Near the top of my list would be :

Alan Ball.

Aug 1966
We played 2 Derbies in 14 days
In the first we were lucky to get Nil
A few days later Catterick signed the World Cup Final MotM
10 days later, He totally ripped them a new one.

Started the process of turning losers in to winners, he had help and it didn't happen over night.

But it did happen

would have to be Gary Speed for me. I was moolighting for Kennedys during my nurse training, i was reinstating a road in this housing estate in north wales, this fella came over as i had an everton cap on, buzzing he was, telling me his son was signing for the blues tomorrow, but not to say owt. It was Gary Speeds dad. Always wanted him to play for us, was so chuffed šŸ’™šŸ’™šŸ’™

I'd love to come out with a leftfield answer, but I'm Team Kanchelskis on this one, too.

I was only 13 so didn't quite get the nuance of the whole transfer game. I was just really confused that we were getting a great player for - even in those times - not a massive amount of money. Assumed there'd have to be something wrong with him like a bad injury or whatever.

Very Everton of us to only get one full season out of him, but what a season!

I remember being subsequently very excited when we signed Speed (only name and number I ever got on a shirt), and thought we'd be challenging for honours with those two in the team, but then the wheels came off a bit, Kanchelskis buggered off and Speed wasn't too far behind.

Maybe Reidy
Not just for his own game but what he had was highly contagious and spread amongst a group of standard players turning them into a blistering team.

I remember being on holiday in Margate the summer we signed him, and I also vividly remember my dad popping to the shop to buy a newspaper one morning, and returning shortly later absolutely fuming, holding up the back page to show me that big "KAN-CELLED" headline. It's a memory that has stuck with me for years, and I've been trying and failing to find an image of it for absolutely ages, I was starting to think it was a false memory! But there it is at the 57 second mark of that video!
