Hey fellow blues and lurkers

I'm interested know what hidden gems you know of which are great places to watch either an up and coming touring band or local band in your area, and also which ones are places to avoid due to crap owner or crap building.

Specifically small venues, not places like Wembley stadium or o2 arena. A place where anyone on this forum could play as their first ever gig.

I've also heard of the Lisbon and my ma's house as well.

I'll start.

Good: Voodoo Lounge, Stamford, UK - good sound, cool vibes, occasional touring band pops down there like Blaze Bayley.

Bad: Met Lounge, Peterborough, UK. Decent size venue, and sound. Absolute bell of an owner, killing any establishing scene by insisting bands break a minimum of 40 people to a gig.

I say I'm interested, but really it's a lazy attempt at scouting for new venues.

In Chicago, my recollection of the best haunts I would frequent in high school/college were Cabaret Metro (now just called the Metro), Aragon Ball Room, Riviera Theatre...and for some smaller shows, the Empty Bottle, the Hideout. I would contrast these with less exciting (not necessarily "worst") places like Tinley Park Music Theatre, Poplar Creek (no longer around), Alpine Valley, Rosemont Horizon. Most of these latter places are "arena rock" venues that have been given new corporate names. Best place for Jazz was the Green Mill.

Haven't been back to Chicago in a long while, though, so things might have changed.

?

Chicago Theatre. Quality acoustics and the venue just wrecks.

I have been in better clubs with better acoustics across the country, but picking another venue around town is a bit like saying that the Arcada Theater is the place to see a show. It's not bad, and the owner brings quality stuff in, but there are limits to the venue and his ability to draw acts.

Ah yes, good one. Hadn't really been there too much, but it is a great place. Also the Auditorium Theatre as well...saw Zappa there back in 88.

When I did a trip across the states I was taken to a gig by some mates, only could fit 200 people tops but it had an upstairs balcony which was cool.

Problem was the band were playing in front of 30 people maybe, and played experimental music so went very quiet at points, I drunkenly burped and it reverberating around the whole venue. Got some interesting looks after that

The Ostrich Inn has a lot of live music and uses one of the same promotor (Scary Clown) as Voodoo Lounge
