I believe it is a rugby colloquialism from the days when aus rugby had cleaned its act up, the fans/supporters would chant 'bring back the biff' in reference to there not being enough violence in the game and them wanting haymakers thrown like pickles at @cronullasharks - to double check this aspect lets tag @McBain in as well.
