Hi lads, just off to Germany in a couple of weeks for a few days in Bamberg. Anyone on here been over there and can pass me any tips on where to go and more specifically, where to eat and drink! We're flying into Nuremberg and are thinking of hiring a car to get up to Bamberg as we don't arrive until late, otherwise we'd have caught the train.
Cheers!

Awesome!!
I was an exchange student in Bamberg...actually met my wife there. Get yourself to Schenkerla Brewery they are famous for their Rauchbier but also have some really good food. Memory is fading a bit but believe you want to go to Sandstrasse for places to eat and drink. For a quick, low cost (late night option), go for Imbiss Marmaris. Best doener in town. I watched the 2004 Super Bowl in the Irish pub in town. Another good spot in town, at least 10-12 years ago, was Bolero for drinks and tapas.
Would highly recommend making the trip up to Altenburg and Michaelsberg.
Have a great time. Must admit I'm jealous as I haven't yet been back and it's such a great city that few people have heard of. Let me know if you have any other questions. Post some pics/ review of spots if you can

Was there (Bamberg) a couple of weeks ago. Michaelsberg is being renovated so the church is closed but the beer museum up there (run by enthusiasts, well into chatting about Bavarian beer) is a decent visit and the views from the hill are good. (There are seven hills around the town, most of them with churches/monasteries on top.) The big cathedral square is quite impressive and the 'old town' around the river is where most of the tourist office photos come from. Worth getting one of the cheap guidebooks and doing the walking tour - after seven (actually six on foot unless you are planning on killing yourself to get to Altenburg) you will be in the mood to check out the beer.

Bamberg is famous for its beer so has a special brewery map from the tourist office and, as @wm02 mentioned above, it has a special Rauchbier (smoked beer). For a tourist town, I thought the prices for meals and drink were quite cheap compared to further south - if you like typical Bavarian fare (sausages, roast knuckle of pork, dumplings, good beer, etc.) then you will have a great time.

If you've seen all the sights in Bamberg and are looking for a day out, nearby Bayreuth is also quite interesting.

Some great towns (and villages) around Bavaria - a much under-rated destination, imo.

Have a good time mate, I've wanted to visit Bamberg for ages. Went to Coburg (hour north) a few years back and it was great, but heard Bamberg is very better. Food and drink should be unreal. Make sure you post here with some pics and comments about your trip when you return.
