Baines as a CDM

Have to disagree there mate. It's a totally different prospect attacking from full-back than it is from left midfield. There's a lot less space to attack.

So when he attacks down the left 3 ft from the line he has bags of room...mmmm.... maybe he can only go inside then.... maybe he would have a bit MORE room and thus able to play his 1-2's both inside and out... be his own Pienaar so to speak

Mate, that's when he's running on to things. You do realise that a left midfielder spends a lot of time with his back against the opposition defence? Tell me, how many times have you seen Baines playing with his back to goal (so to speak)?

I'd rather give him some time as a left midfielder instead of LB or CDM position, always thought he'd be ace there. Knows what covers needed, knows how to get forward and what the full back needs to get involved. Would be ace with a defender behind him.
In Bobby's 4-2-3-1 the wide midfielders are very attack-minded wingers (McGeady, Deulofeu) - they don't cover back for the fullbacks to any real extent because Barry drops back to make a back three. In Moyes' 4-2-3-1, which was more often a 4-4-1-1, the wide midfielders were not out and out wingers (bar Mirallas) and the Baines/Pienaar combo worked because of that.

What I mean is I'm not sure that Baines is suited to play as a wide LM / LW in Bobby's formation, with the tactics and personnel the Catalan uses. He would have been more suited to the wide LM role in Moyes' system.

I can see why Bobby thinks Baines might move to the left side of a CDM pair as he gets a bit older and maybe loses a little pace, particularly as we have Oviedo, who is blisteringly fast, waiting to play at LB and, unless Barry signs, we have a vacancy at left CDM. He's basically saying that he thinks Baines can do next season what Barry did this season, and I believe he's on to something. It would be a great option to have should Baines start to lose a little pace, because in the current system our fullbacks have to be the fastest guys on the paddock.

Why can't we just play our players in their best positions ffs?

Pep's a beaut. Lahm's a much better full back than he is a DM.

But mate, Woy should have played Glen Johnson as a winger. He's better going forward than he is defending, so by that logic, he should be a winger :hayee:

I don't think Baines has the physical attributes to play in a center mid pair, but if for the sake of tactics we wanted to go a bit more defensive and play three in the middle (Baines, Barry and McCarthy, for example) I think he could make a go of it.

The idea has a few things going for it. Opposition teams would have to worry about Baines putting crosses in from deep while also keeping an eye on Oviedo up the left, and Baines would get more opportunities to shoot from open play.

Massive massive no go! would b setting up a player to fail, a player who has already earned the right to b called a legend! as a fullback he’s been second to none as he has all the attributes and more for this roll but i also think he’s fullfilled this roll so greatly is cos he’s settled in to the club so well and he’s comfortable here so more confident and this is why he didnt think twice when the mancs came sniffing. baines is a laid back shy lad who plays the game cos he loves it, he isnt built for the massive pressure that would go with such a big change, to be a leader in the middle of the park! no chance! we have fallen in love with barry and mccarthy this year cos we have seen what comes with this roll and i think baines would explode with that pressure! just look at baines for england when out of his comfort zone! please dont set a legend up to fail cos i dont want to b reading the posts when it goes wrong!!

i) not many Lfooted player DO play with their back to the goal when playing on the left, especially out wide, for when the ball comes to their good foot their main option ( given the whole geometry and position on the field ) is only being able to play it back or out, or at a pinch, play it 'blind' with the outside of the left foot.

ii) au contraire, that's when he can play his 1-2's to get past the traffic in his way.

iii) We'll either see it or we won't, Bobby will either try it or he won't and if he does it will either work or it won't... but it is possible. I seem to agree with Bobby, you don't.
*mmmmm ponders the likelyhood of BOTH of us being wrong....
nah.

Left sided defensive midfielders need to be able to defend when we push our fullbacks forward. That's the point of our system.

Full-backs are almost wingers now which is the reason why Oviedo would be good there.

As someone else said the pass into Rooney for that chance shows that Baines has the passing ability to play that role. The only thing we haven't seen is his ability to switch play but given that he has possibly the most accurate left foot I've seen since Sheedy I don't think that would be a problem.

As for playing with his back to goal. I've no idea where that comes from. If he would have a weakness it would be in the air.

It's a bloody stupid idea, he would be as bad as Osman in CDM.

Phil Neville is the only quality CDM I've ever seen wear a blue shirt

I have seen other quality CDM's in a blue shirt. But I agree that Phil Neville was a good CDM for a few years in an Everton shirt, especially during the two seasons prior to his last season with us. Loads of morons will tell you that he was utter crap though, whilst simultaneously lauding Fellaini's defensive capabilities lollollol. From a defensive perspective, Neville was streets ahead of Fellaini.

We should also let Howard take all the Free Kicks and Pens, I mean it worked for Ceni and Chilavert.

We should also let Jags play in goal a few times, cos you know?
