Baines as a CDM

There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever, literally zero, zip whichever terminology you like, to suggest Bainsey will be a good midfielder.

I can however show quite a lot of evidence as too why he should stay at full back.

But never mind Roberto "THINKS" he may be able too transition so must be true.

FFS.

I think moving Baines to CDM, playing Oviedo and buying Robertson of Dundee makes perfect sense.

You have to remember. The way we play the L CDM needs to be able to do a job as a left back to guard for when our left back pushes so far forward. That's why Barry was such a hit and why Gerrard/Henderson were such failures.

We would loose Baines overlapping but at 30 how many more years can he do that?
This is almost exactly my thoughts on the subject; did anyone see in the England games how Baines - ignored by team mates when out in good positions - moved inside, and created a few good chances with defence splitting passes. One of these was a pearl of a chance which Shrek fluffed.
I think Roberto knew Barry wasnt certain to stay, and with the revelation of 'Oviedo baby' at RB has considered this shift as a plan B. With all the flak frok the WC fallout ringing in his ears, a change could suit LB as he nears 30 and uses his brain and McCarthy's engine, plus covers the attaking Oviedo.

....worth a look at pre-season, you wont know until you try it. Suspect though that we might bring one or two midfielders in, so the Manager might not consider Baines in that role.

I'd rather give him some time as a left midfielder instead of LB or CDM position, always thought he'd be ace there. Knows what covers needed, knows how to get forward and what the full back needs to get involved. Would be ace with a defender behind him.

Have to disagree there mate. It's a totally different prospect attacking from full-back than it is from left midfield. There's a lot less space to attack.

Seeing as his main threat and best qualities are going forward and good delivery, I really can't see what he could offer in CM. I like him at LB so a no from me.

Baines is the naughtiest left back we know.... but without Pienaar he can't play to his full potential and ( except maybe in short bursts ) Pienaar's best day are behind him. Baines is nearly 30, not the death knell it once was I know, but that half a yard makes the difference at the top level.

We have already seen that ( with England especially ) poorly used he is not exactly a liability, but neither is he contributing to the total effectiveness of the team.

So short of Roberto finding a Pienaar clone and that RM actually wants to play that way ( lets face it it was moyes the pony's 1 trick ) AND that RM thinks it's viable, the 3 or 4 yrs as an effective DMer is not the end of the world

short version; worth a try
