The A&E was shut since earlier in the year because they didn't have enough staff. Make of that what you will next time Cameron says there have been no cuts in the NHS.

Just speaking to the wife about this, she says it's happened a few times there. People keep getting struck off and there's no replacements coming in.

4th largest employer on earth. Budget of £106 billion. We should have platinum plated healthcare for all.
Something needs to change drastically!

It'll all get better when the private health care companies need to siphon of billions of profit as well. Already a good portion of that 106 billion goes into their hands.

Renationalise the NHS and stop cutting services and hospitals.

To put it into context, that's only ~£1800 per capita, which when considering that some drugs (e.g newly developed chemotherapy drugs) can cost well into the tens of thousands of pounds per course, isn't an awfully large amount.

What happened to " Cradle to the grave " ?

Sadly still exists mate, unfortunately the journey is often shorter as it was for this little girl. Thoughts should go to her parents and immediate family.

But, let's not jump on a wagon blaming the hard working people at the coal face, they have enough on their conscience with the things the see and deal with every day without needing to have the guilt of this tragedy being dumped on them as well.

The American privatised system constantly fails that nation, especially the poor but also the middle class forced into selling their homes to pay for health care provision. Looking at stats privatised health care is always more expensive.

Sadly Stafford is a NHS trust hospital - part of a move to privatisation embraced by the last two governments - and the board members made a decision to close the A and E at night due to staff shortages (doubtlessly if they were willing to pay proper money they would have found the staff) and to save the hospital money. These hospitals are run like little businesses with human resources, cleaning, catering all outsourced to private companies — there seems to be little remit to consider the health of patients as a priority.

Look forward to more of this as the tories privatised NHS comes fully into swing. Britain's children will start dying with alacrity.

Shame none of us kicked up enough of a stink when these bastards were running it through parliament. For my part I campaigned and marched with others.

Sadly, so few got involved. Everyone like zombie couch potatoes watching sky as the jewel in the birthright of every common born boy and girl was stripped from our hands.

For the record the private health bill has been sold as still being 'free at point of entry'.

same as Stafford trust foundation is meant to be 'patient led'.

Ask the family of this baby about that.

As someone else posted £106bn sounds a lot, but our healthcare spending is low compared to most developed countries. Anyway, there's no excuse for what happened above, it's what happens when those in charge are too busy looking at the finances instead of the patients. Remember that Staffs is a foundation trust, and it got that status based on its financial performance.

You will see more and more headlines like this as services are cut, no question.

Health, Education and Infrastructure should be the cornerstone of the West and it's Policies.

Anything else is just fluff.

Amen, brother.

You wouldn't get that impression if you looked around you though. Most people only give a **** about shiny phones and celebrities.

People should absolutely be aware that the reason this happened was incompetence at the top, and the resulting policies, not the fault of any individual.

Stafford Hospital has had serious problems over the last few years. Re the public/private thing, Hinchingbrooke are being run by Circle Healthcare (who have a pretty good rep), so lets see what they can do with the place.

Not surprised by this case though sadly. Remember last year being hit by a car whilst on my bike and the GP surgery next to the accident wouldn't check me over because I wasn't registered there. Management of healthcare in Britain is pretty poor.

On the cost thing mentioned earlier. The missus is a nurse on ICU, and the churn rate of nurses on that ward is incredible. She's only been in the job 10 months but is already one of the more senior members of staff on the ward. Stress levels etc. are incredibly high, and who fills the gaps when nurses leave due to the stress in the job? Bank or agency staff that are paid three times the salary. It's daft really.
