"
"The coaches think that scoring goals away is not as difficult as it was in the past," said Uefa deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti after the meeting in Switzerland.

"They think the rule should be reviewed and that's what we will do."

The rule was first introduced in the former European Cup Winners' Cup competition in 1965 as an alternative to tossing a coin or staging a replay on a neutral ground at a time when travelling abroad was far more challenging.

Marchetti said the coaches felt the rule was also counter-productive and that, as much as encouraging away teams to attack, it induced home teams to defend to avoid conceding a costly goal."

I can understand the reasoning. Don't feel particularly strongly about it either way.

What does GOT think?

Bin it completely or follow the EFL semi final example and only apply it after extra time.

Nothing beats penalty shootouts. Penalty shootouts and red cards are the best thing about football.
Penalty shoot outs encourage boring defensive play because the weaker team often digs in and plays for penalties as seen in international tournaments. The away goals rule keeps the game on edge as the dynamic changes.

Red cards often ruin games of football.

(Collects his charts and graphs and testimonials to give still another speech about how the away goals rule should not be used in extra time of the second leg)

The rule is divisive. It can kill a game off in an instant (by making a side (0-1 down, first leg) score 3.

Penalties replaced the need for away goals (they were introduced in 1970, our game v BMG the first example)

The away side get up to 120 minutes in the 2nd leg to score one. (e.g. 1-1 plus 1-1). So whilst an away goal in the first leg is "useful" let's say it's a 2-1 defeat, the opposition, rightly, have 90 minutes to counter this (2-1 loss - now extra time) but then another 30 minutes of away time.. either abolish it or at the least only count after extra-time or even not count it in extra-time. Abolishing it seems the best solution.

Sod what the coaches think, they may be highly paid in a glamorous job, but that doesn't make them necessarily a brain pool. Both teams get an away leg, and if it's easier to score then its the the same for both. Fairness and absolutely bloody obviousness dictates that the away goal should apply, apart from during the extra time of the second leg.

Which means Uefa will now be analysing past games to see what rule change would have, in the past, benefitted the wealthier tv-drawing clubs more.

Think it needs to be binned, it doesn't make sense anyway. It used to be a first time ever for English teams going go to Croatia etc and knowing whether they'd score away, but they allow so many teams in Europe now that they're there year after year so European away ties aren't as hard as they used to be.

Giving the away team an extra 30 mins to get an away goal is pure stupidity too.

I believe there is an alternative being considered based on the Cricket 1.

The experts are currently seeing if it offers any bias to a team & looking to implement the 'Aldridge Lawro' method of determining the result in the latter stages of the competitions.

Needs scrapping. The teams with a second leg home advantage in a big tie seem to have the edge in terms of going through. If a tie was level after 180 minutes then it should just go straight to pens. If the weaker team wants to defend and hold out for 180 minutes then it’s on the better team to put them away or win the shoot out.

Yeah but they’re boss.
