Interesting that even by replacing Cahill with Mirallas our average age still sneaks up. I've always thought that a player reaches their peak at 28, so we're right on it as a side at the moment.

Pienaar/Gibson/Jelly weren't in our squad at the start of last season. You'd probably be best averaging the 18 plays on pitch/bench on first game of season to have a better comparison.

Like you've left out Hibbert and Distin, when they were a big part of last season/ probably this season.

...personally, I think that Jagielka should have gone if anyone had to in order to get cash in.

We should be looking to bring in Duffy more.

Its almost as if anybody aged a Year.

I think that might make the average age increase.

When we didn't buy anyone for a long spell the average age of the squad will have gone up by about 2 years. It can soon sneak up one you if you don't keep moving older players on and bringing through 24 year olds instead of 28 year olds.

I think that the kind of money being paid for players over 28 shows that this is no longer the case - I guess sports science is playing a role in that. I think though that Moyes is aware and is putting a plan in place to make sure that figure reduces as one or two of the older ones retire in the next season or so. There is no point having younger players though for the sake of a number if they're not of the necessary quality or better than those older.

I was trying to make direct comparisons, so I kept Neville and Heitinga in the side and I went with the team that finished last season to see what effect this summer's transfers had had to the average age.

The only fair way is to look at the players we shipped out and compare the ages of the players we shipped in.

Seems the fairest thing to me.

Pretty sure you dont mean the start of last season mate, seeing as Jelavic, Gibson and Pienaar didnt play for us.

I mean their age at the start of last season. I could have said their age at the end of last season compared to at the start of this season, so as to include Jelavic, Gibson and Pienaar but it would have been a bit pointless.

I thought about doing it that way, but I don't think Moyes quite knows how much he'll use Naismith and Mirallas just yet. He might promote Osman or Coleman in the short term.
