20. THE HARBOUR

Yes, spelled with a 'u', the correct way. The gem of the city, 'Port Jackson' is the playground for Sydneysiders getting back to nature. 19 kms long and with an area of 55 sq kms, the Harbour is a drowned valley, or ria. There's evidence as little as 10,000 years ago the Harbour was land. Aussies and the World love the place. It's so close to the City and can be accessed from north, South East and West. Get out in a Tinny to do some fishing, or on a ferry or cruiser to head over to Manly for a beer and Fish and Chips. There are hundreds of places to chill out right across the Harbour. There's secluded Islands you can sail to, check out places like Cockatoo Island http://www.cockatooisland.gov.au/ The Touristy delights of Darling Harbour http://www.darlingharbour.com/

The Harbour naturally funnels into rivers, Middle Harbour and Lane Cove River to the north, and the Parramatta River to the west.

Isn't Cockatoo Island a toxic dump, from all the asbestos etc when it was a shipyard ? There was a big expose on it when I was there, there was also a denial of any asbestos at garden Island where I was working, despite yellow bags everywhere with 'Danger- Asbestos Waste' all over the quay.

They cleaned the Harbour up over the last decade mate. I'd think you'd be pretty shocked at the pace of development in this city nowadays.

All the Mortlake/Concord factories have been bulldozed or converted in Apartments. Cockatoo island just held the world dirt bike championships and has been redeveloped.

I don't think you'd recognise the place now mate.
