Problem with that viewpoint is that we don't have any money to spend on players. Any money brought in was to balance the books and contribute to the stadium.

We didn't have the cash to get Emery and to then back him with many 20-30m players.

Definitely. But even this group can be selected, set up, and mentally prepared to perform way way way better than this. Truly awful. The pre-season confidence mumbo jumbo was in one ear out the other.
