What boxes did he tick? He can’t cover any position to an actual acceptable standard. Agree that he was on a free though.

Personally think he is past it but last game of the season against Bournemouth we didn't have a recognised fullback available.

His injury record is good and is well regarded by all accounts. Has a lot of experience and even last season he started more league games than Patterson has started league games in his career.

Cover wise he is a meh signing for a season.

But he’s not cover, he plays every game, and is terrible. He can no longer play the sport of football, it was utterly ridiculous to sign a 38 year old.

Ironically we let Antonee Robinson go. He's developed into a competent, but not world beating, fullback. Arguably better than some on that list

However, he wasn't going to get a look in here at the time, so it worked out well for him.

Mainly because there wasn't a push to add competition to Coleman as he was never getting dropped.

Only time he had competition was when we brought Sidibe in on loan. Then brands decided to save money by using Kenny and Holgate there.

We let a USA international go for 4 million doing great at Fulham - an Everton that moment - To fetch Ashley Young in aged 38 years old who played stop gap for Villa last season was just plain stupid Dyche .....

I can see James Gardner our best midfielder at right back with the 34 year old Gana retuning .... next game - this Manager will see us relegated & we can't afford to pay him off .....

Joey he was one of Villa's players of the season. After Seamus we have nobody that can defend at right back. Patterson is an okay stand in for wide right but can't be trusted in defence. We need young for this season at least.

Technically this is what he should have been, someone able to cover numerous positions on the field if we have problems with injuries due to our small squad. This makes sense.

Dyche starting him each week does not.

I agree and that includes Young.
